Nevermore's Movie Reviews

This is the area specifically devoted to reviews and/or comments regarding one of my favorite topics -- movies. The reviews (complete with a numerical rating of 1-10) that can be found here will often have little to do with what the 'professional critics' have to say. After all, this is all about my thoughts and opinions.

As for the ratings, they're hard to explain. The number is completely subjective, based upon a combination of my enjoyment of the movie, the movie's success in achieving the goals of its genre (comedies should be funny, mysteries should keep the viewer guessing, etc.), and my view of the overall cinematic quality of the film. (For example, I think Brain Donors excels in generating laughs, and I also happen to enjoy the movie a great deal. But the overall rating suffers for lack of originalty in the script and a couple of questionable casting choices that led to some disappointingly wooden performances.) The value of each of these three criteria varies from film to film. Sometimes I'll hold a movie to a higher standard and penalize it for not achieving more with its writer/director/cast/budget. (A good example is Batman & Robin which, despite a great budget, a screenwriter who has since won an Academy Award, and a solid cast, was an absolute piece of hot steaming shit.) Sometimes a movie will earn 'extra credit' for overachieving what might have been expected when looking at it on paper, before being shot. (Case in point -- Pitch Black.) All I can say is that these ratings make sense in my head, and just because a movie might get a low rating does not necessarily mean that I don't like it or wouldn't recommend it -- it might just mean that as good as the film was, I was somewhat disappointed that it wasn't even more.

I've tried to avoid only rating the more 'popular' movies that it seems everyone's seen. Granted, there are several blockbusters mentioned, but I try to give more than equal time to movies that, while still not exactly unpopular, might not be the first films to jump to some people's minds.

As a courtesy, I've linked each title to its page on the International Movie Database, which is the ultimate website for all movie buffs. Following the link will give you all the information you could possibly want on these movies, including the full credited cast/crew, release dates, trivia, alternate endings, links to fan sites, and even some favorite quotes from the movie, as listed by IMDb members. If you're at all interested in these movies, I encourage you to follow the links.

Finally, I've classified each movie by genre. Now as anyone who's seen lots of movies knows, classifying many movies into only one genre can be problematic. However, I have done my best. Where a movie could easily fit into two or more categories, I have chosen what I consider the primary category. Also, there are a few sub-categorizations, such as 'Comedy (Parody).' These are there to help better define the movie's genre.

Should you find something that appears to be an obvious oversight on the list, you might want to look on the Disavowed List, which is where I list all those movies that I (and many others, I think) wish had never been made.

If you have a differing opinion on a review, feel free to email me. Now, just click on a genre and proceed to the reviews...
