Editorial: Tarot Ramblings
Editorial: Tarot Ramblings We are very, very lucky in that Arnell Ando and Leslie Cochran are creating another great calendar for 2005. Preview the artwork here: www.arnellart.com/cal-promo.htm. From the site: 2005 Tarot Art Calendar: Price $25.00 + P&H (Priority Mail, including insurance within US.) Shipments will begin in September and are first come-first serve. Only 100 calendars will be printed! Each image signed by the artist (and a frameable piece of art)! Early orders (received by September 30th) get a cool bonus surprise (created especially for this limited edition calendar)! Another calendar was brought to my attention by Diane Wilkes of Tarot Passages, and that is the Tarot Lovers calendar by Major Tom of Aeclectic Tarot fame. This calendar presents a new spread and a different deck for each month. More information is available here: Tarot Lovers' Calendar 2004 . Kudos to Major Tom for donating a portion of the proceeds to Aeclectic Tarot to keep the show going! Joanna Powell-Colbert's latest cards for her Gaian Tarot: The Builder (The Emperor) here, Bindweed (The Devil) here. Joanna also has a new column appearing in the Pan Gaia Journal (www.pangaia.com). The new Sagewoman 2005 calendar is out, featuring two Gaian Tarot images, with text by Full Moon Dreams creator Lunaea Weatherstone. You can view/purchase the calendar here: www.amberlotus.com/sagewoman-05-cal.html. The book that we have all been eagerly awaiting has arrived! Llewellyn's Tarot Reader 2005 is now available. To read a review of the book, click Llewellyn Reader 2005. To purchase the book, click Llewellyn's Tarot Reader 2005. One of my favorite Tarot author's and illustrator's, Robert M. Place (The Buddha Tarot, The Tarot of the Saints, The Angels Tarot, The Alchemical Tarot) has scans up for his yet to be published deck The Tarot Of The Seven Fold Mystery. Limited edition prints are available for a very reasonable price - well worth a visit! From Andrew Kostenko of Tarot-L, a quite interesting site in progress on early Tarot cards (with some pages in English, some in French, some in Spanish, and some in Russian): users.iptelecom.net.ua/~grdoor/tarotocc.html. From the illustrious Exoteric-L list, Zoe shared this link to a very "different" Tarot site. Mind expanding, to say the least! Tarot. I found this one all on my own. ;-) The site is called House of Tarot, and they specialize in Tarot decks (go figure!). You can search by deck category, or by publisher. The prices seem a bit high, but ... shipping is free! This is a site well worth checking out: www.houseoftarot.com. From Tarot-l (many thanks to Alain Bougearal) we have the following links, which are think pieces on Dante's Divine Comedy and its possible influence on Tarot. From Robert V. O'Neil (the great Bunny Bob!): Tarot.com :: Tarot, Astrology, Numerology & I-Ching - a personal essay entitled "Dante's Commedia And The Tarot". From Michael J. Hurst, a review of WIlliam Seabury's book Tarot Cards and Dante: Seabury Book Review. These are well written articles that are a joy to read. Again - thank you to Alain! More good news from Trionfi.com re their Tarot Museum: they now have a function in place that will allow two cards to be placed on the screen at the same time - either from the same deck, or from different decks. A wonderful opportunity to do some on-line comparative reading, or to do some research. The link is: http://trionfi.com/0/s/x/. My monthly horoscope may be seen at: http://www.horoscope.thecrystalgate.com. I use Tarot for mundane guidance and the Sacred Path cards by Jami Sams for spiritual guidance. I am always looking for feedback here. :)
On-line Divination sites: In cruising the Internet I have found several on-line divination sites - both Tarot and non-Tarot, that are fun and worth spending time with. Some of these sites are for specific Tarot decks - and I have to say that the art is stupendous! It makes me feel glad to be alive, and more than happy to be part of the Tarot world. Tarot Spread: The Dark Moon Spread This months tarot spread comes from Edain McCoy's new book Past Life & Karmic Tarot (Llewellyn Publications, 2004). It is named for the new moon (the dark moon - specifically the three night period when no moon shows), and deals with matters of a hidden nature. This can be used as a three or four card spread, and shows what is hidden from the Seeker in terms of karma from a past life, as well as how that karma will manifest in their present life if they continue on the path that they are currently on. Ms McCoy presents the layout in this fashion:
2 1 I prefer to read it in a linear fashion:
2 3 The positions are defined as follows: 1. A major issue or event from the past life of the Seeker that remains unresolved in their present life. 2. Something hidden in the Seeker's current life that is related to card number 1. 3. The outcome of this hidden karmic issue is the Seeker remains on their current path. 4. This card is only drawn if the outcome in card number 3 was unacceptable, and the Seeker wishes to change it. Card number 4 hints at changes the Seeker can make in their current life to overcome this past karma. If a card number 4 is drawn, it is placed over card number 2 in the spread. If there was work that needed to be done to help resolve the past life karma, Ms McCoy recommends repeating the spread after the Seeker has had some time to implement the indicated changes in their life to see if the karma has been resolved, or if more work is needed. The cards that I pulled for this example are:
1. The Chariot The karma from this Seeker's past life that is being carried forward has to do with self discipline, and maintaining control over one's emotions and ones life. Body, mind and spirit were not in alignment in this lifetime, and the Seeker was not able to overcome the obstacles in their path. What is hidden in the Seeker's present life is the need to let go of what no longer serves them, and to allow change to come into their life. This is a time of dissolving self-imposed boundaries and releasing the restrictions on how the Seeker expresses themselves. The outcome, if the Seeker remains on their current path, has a great deal to do with the spiritual nature of the Seeker, with their connection to the Divine in their life. If they are able to balance their inner, intuitive voice with their need to conform to the world around them, this karmic issue can be resolved. I did not draw a 4th card here, because I feel that the answer to this karmic issue is within the nature of the Hierophant itself, and should be addressed on that level. Scans from this months decks (The Gendron Tarot, The Radiant Rider-Wait Tarot and The Blue Moon Tarot) for this spread can be seen here.
Guest Article: Tradition, by Gigi Miner In the world of publishing, there is a myriad of publishers. Within these organizations are proofreaders, editors, agents and any number of other administrative and support positions. In the mainstream world of publishing, there is certainly no end of manuscripts and articles to fill these many publishing houses and to pay the salaries of those that help get such works into the public eye. When we cross an imaginary border into a specific genre of writing, we are faced with a slightly more limited choice in publishers. Given that these fewer organizations may be faced with just as many submissions as the conventional publishers, you have a whole new world with which to deal. When I decided I would enter my works into the arena with the throng of other "New Age" authors, I knew I was in for some difficulties when it came to publishing. I have been writing, in many different genres, for quite some years now. During all of that time, I have yet to be published in the traditional manner. I have made the submissions. I have received the rejection letters. I have also been asked, many a time, to write more by those that read my work. Does this make you a little confused? It does me. How does one who has something to say, with an audience that wants to hear it, get their work out into the world for others to see? Welcome to the world of self-publishing. I have heard and learned all of the warnings about writing. "You cannot believe those closest to you to give you an objective critique of your work." "You have to know someone in the business." "Print on Demand publishing is not professional enough." Yes, I have heard the stories, I listened to them, and then I got sick of feeling as if someone was creating a cage for me. I decided that if the powers-that-be did not have the presence of mind to figure out that there are voices that need to be heard, outside of the "top ten", then I would create my own place and make my own voice heard.
Collector's Edition Deck Reprinting: Blue Moon Tarot By the time that I heard about Julie Cuccia-Watts majors only Blue Moon Tarot, it was out of print - and not to be found anywhere! I was able to purchase her Ancestral Path Tarot - which has resided by my computer since day one, and is a great source of joy. Goddess is with us - Julie has decided to do a second printing of her Blue Moon Tarot! I for one am not going to miss out this time! The Blue Moon Tarot is an exquisite deck that is based on the cycle of the Moon. The sequence follows the solar cross quarter days, as well as the lunar cycle. The Blue Moon exhibits the true tradition of the feminine as shown through the Moon (maiden/mother/crone). A wonderful deck to use for personal readings, or for ritual or ceremonial work. The Collectors Edition of the Blue Moon Tarot is being printed as 3.25 X 4.5 on 12 point cardstock, with UV coating. The deck will be accompanied by a 44 page stitched paperback booklet. There is a very special reason for Julie to do this printing - the proceeds will be used to help publish her latest deck in progress, the MAAT Tarot. The scheduled release date for this printing is the end of June. I am very excited about it, and I think that all of you will be too (unless you already own the deck!). The Blue Moon Tarot may be viewed here: www.newmoontradingco.com/trading/bluemoon/bluemoon.htm The Collectors Edition printing for the Blue Moon Tarot is a limited edition printing. Purchase price for the cards is $50.00, which includes the 44 page booklet and shipping. Payment may be made through the Pay Pal button on Julie's website - www.newmoontradingco.com.
Who am I? Each month I am going to have one card from the Tarot talk to my readers. The card will in some way tell you something about itself and what it stands for. I would like to have you the reader send in which card you think is speaking, and a short explanation of why you choose that card. In some instances, you may feel that more than one card is being represented. In the following months newsletter, I will present all of my readers opinions, as well as a new card for that month. In this manner, in real time, we can see the power (energy) behind the cards, and perhaps get a feel for how to use them in our lives. Who am I?08/01/04 Walk with me - life is a never ending series of movements and change. Nothing ever remains the same - nor should you! This card was the Wheel of Fortune. Who am I? 09/01/04 Note: In next months newsletter I will publish who my readers feel this description refers to. If you wish to remain anonymous please let me know, and I will honor that request. Give me the reasoning behind your thought - I think we will see that there can be more than one answer here. Perhaps this small exercise can be used to open us all to new ways of communicating with the Tarot. :)
