Editorial: Tarot Ramblings

In my wanders through the Internet this past month I found a new place to play - the "freebie" pages on Llewellyn's site! Here you can get a free Tarot reading, track the phases of the Moon, and get a free spell each day, as well as finding out what you Magical Personality is. For fun, I took the Magical Personality quiz. I am not going to say what came out, because I still have to think about it. I answered the questions honestly, but came up with a response that doesn't seem to be me. What happens here is that, based on your answeers to their quiz, you are assigned a magical animal (by elemental type) that directly personifies you, and a shadow animal, that indicates where the focus of personal work should be. I understand the shadow side - it had to do with the element of Fire. However, the primary element for me came out Water, which is in actuality not dominant in my astrological chart, nor in my persona. At any rate - I had a great time doing this! To see where you fall, go to www/llewellyn.com and click on the "Fun and Free" smiley face at the top of the page. (BTW - This is all based on the book "Magical Personality", by Mike Leslie, which is a book on strengthening personal magic by personality types.)

Paul Hughs-Barlow's new book, Tarot And The Magus, is now available at http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1904658024/qid%3D1075459478/026-4514346-6122056 and at www.aeonbooks.co.uk.

Totally off the topic of Tarot, but totally "on" the topic of living a focused life, I ran across this motivational site, and felt that it was worth sharing for those of us trying to focus on achieving our goals: www.tut.com.

This link was brought to the attention of the Tarot-l audience: www.limerick-leader.ie/issues/20030726/interview.html. It is an interview with the author of a new book on Tarot - a Benedictine monk with some very interesting things to say.

Artist/visionary Robert M. Place (Tarot of the Saints, The Alchemical Tarot, The Buddha Tarot, The Buddha Tarot Companion) has a new newsletter that was "just born" - The Restored Temple of Hermes, available through his site www.thealchemicaltarot.com. See Tarot tidbits for more info.

On-line Divination sites:

In cruising the internet this past month I have found several on-line divination sites - both Tarot and non-Tarot, that are both fun and worth spending time with. Some of these sites are for specific Tarot decks - and I have to say the the art is stupendous! It makes me feel glad to be alive, and more than happy to be part of the Tarot world. I hope that you enjoy these as much as I am:

* www.pixelations.com/ogham/index.2.html The Voice Of The Woods - A Celtic Ogham Divination System

* www.thefool.com The Victoria Regina Tarot

* www.theenchantedworld.com Interactive site for Amy Zerner & Monty Farber (Enchanted Tarot)

* The Voyager Tarot (James Wanless)

Who am I?

Each month I am going to have one card from the Tarot talk to my readers. The card will in some way tell you something about itself and what it stands for.

I would like to have you the reader send in which card you think is speaking, and a short explanation of why you choose that card. In some instances, you may feel that more than one card is being represented.

In the following months newsletter, I will present all of my readers opinions, as well as a new card for that month.

In this manner, in real time, we can see the power (energy) behind the cards, and perhaps get a feel for how to use them in our lives.

Who am I? 02/01/04

This is the month to walk with me. I will help your dreams come true, as well as acting as the gateway for you to better connect with yourself and those around you.

From one of my readers:

"My initial guess on the card of the month 2/01/04 is: The Star (grin) I think its the Star because of what you said "will help you make your dreams come true". That could be a thought from memories of what I learned of the Star card. Its also my Tarot birth card and my birthday is in February. peace waves, Devi Raine"

I loved this response- and it is easy to see from this how the same theme can be applied to more than one card!

This Tarot persona was the Queen of Cups.

Who am I? 03/01/04

Walk with me. I am here to nurture your passions and help you achieve your goals.

Note: In next months newsletter I will publish who my readers feel this description refers to. If you wish to remain anonymous please let me know, and I will honor that request. Give me the reasoning behind your thought - I think we will see that there can be more than one answer here. Perhaps this small exercise can be used to open us all to new ways of communicating with the Tarot. :)

Tarot Site Review: Tarot at Telperion Productions

is one of two Tarot sites hosted by Tarot luminary Tom Tadfor Little (the other being The Hermitage (www.tarothermit.com), which is a Tarot history resource site). This site genuinely reflects the manner of the host - gentle, courteous and having great depth. (No, I have never met Tom in person, but through interaction on Tarot-L and other Internet sites I have seen and felt his gracious nature.)

Tom is a Tarot historian, perhaps by nature, but here we also see some of his other projects - scans of the cards that he has developed for the TDC and Mannini collaborative Tarot projects, and previews from the Hermit's Tarot, and deck project that Tom is working on for himself. Having peeked at the scans - I can safely tell you that time with them is well spent! In fact, I strongly suggest that you view his personal deck (the Hermit's Tarot), and study the accompanying text. There are some changes, and some new thinking here that is worth investigating. Not the least of which is grouping the Fool with the other Major Arcana cards - leaving the World as the "stand alone" card!

Tom does a nice job of showing the decks that he works with, presenting scans and reviews for some of them (the Mantegna Tarot and the Visconti-Sforza Tarot among them). There is also a well done section of book reviews, including "Tarot For Yourself" by Mary Greer, "78 Degrees of Wisdom" by Rachal Pollack and "The Book of Thoth" by Aleister Crowley.

There is true magick in his section of essays - amongst which we find him addressing the evolution of Tarot, the Tetracyts spread, and the Major Arcana and the Tree of Life (Tom's personal version). (Sneak down to the bottom of the Essay page - Tom has a series of structured informational sections here on reading the Tarot, using his own personal approach.)

Loads of food for thought on this site - showing great respect for Tarot, the process of Tarot, for himself and for students of Tarot that visit his site. No amount of money could pay for the education that one gets from peeking into Tom's mind!
