Non-Tarot Book Review: Shamanic Experience: A Practical Guide To Psychic Powers

author: Kenneth Meadows
Bear & Company
Inner Traditions International
1991
ISBN #1-59143-002-X

I have a great deal of respect for Kenneth Meadows, having read some of his previous work, including "Earth Medicine" and "The Medicine Way". Meadows work has one overall theme: that of adapting shamanic wisdom from diverse cultures into contemporary usage. He never talks down to the reader, he never hints of "secret wisdom" - he presents his thoughts clearly and concisely, and asks the reader to respect the wisdom that he is sharing.

When speaking of shamanism, and why one would choose to walk this path, he speaks of different kinds of "magic" - the "magic" of the illusionist, the "magick" of the ceremonial occultist and the "magik" of bringing desired changes into physical manifestation. The latter is the world of the shaman - the magik that comes from taking control of ones life.

Tarot Book/Deck Review: The Dragon Tarot

text by: Terry Donaldson
illustrated by: Peter Pracownik
U. S. Games Systems, Inc.
1996
ISBN #0-88079-181-0

suits: Wands, Cups, Swords, Coins
court cards: King, Queen, Knight, Page

The Dragon Tarot, by nature, is a specialty deck. It will appeal to those of us who find dragons and dragon lore appealing. You won't find traditional visual symbolism here - but you will experience a deck that is artistically well thought out and well presented, and eminently "usable".

Donaldson introduces dragons as ancient symbols of knowledge and power - in virtually every culture of the world. The very word "dragon" comes from the Greek word Drakoni, which means "the seeing one". In The Dragon Tarot, Donaldson calls on dragon legends from around the world to present a saga of myth and magic. There is a very interesting section called "Dragonland - A Traveler's Report" , in which the reader is allowed to experience the adventure and magic associated with dragon energy.

In "Your Journey", Donaldson presents techniques that allow the reader to access their imaginations. In "Mastering The Tarot", he shows the reader how the cards come together to tell their story.

Dragon myths run the gamut of experience - from those encompassing greed, lust and the dark side of our personalities to (primarily from the Middle East) to those symbolizing wealth, power and supremacy (primarily from China). Some of my best "growing up" memories are of watching the Dragon winding it's way down the street at parade time. It was fascinating, exciting, colorful - a whole other "world"!

The Dragon also has its place in astrology, which is not something that I was aware of. The Dragon's Head (also called the North Node) represents the karmic lessons that we are to learn in this lifetime. How much more important can anything get - this defines what each lifetime is!

Tarot Deck/Book Reivew: Golden Dawn Magical Tarot

by: Chic Cicero and Sandra Tabitha Cicero
illustrator: Sandra Tabitha Cicero
Llewellyn Publications
2000
ISBN #1-56718-125-2

suits: Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles
court cards: King, Queen, Prince, Princess

I truly have grown fond of Tarot decks with a great deal of essoteric imagery, so it was a joy to review this deck. I was fascinated to learn that it had first been comissioned by Isreal Regardie for work by the Golden Dawn Society. (Yes, by name I knew that this was where the deck originated, but I did not know the "story behind the story" - that which makes decks come vitally alive.) The "Golden Dawn Magical Tarot" is intended to be used for work within the system of symbolic and ritual requirements necessary for Golden Dawn cabalistic work. It can be used, however, by Tarot students at any level for divination, meditation and ritual work.

The 177 page LWB that comes with this deck is quite interesting on its own - and very well written. Tarot students at all levels would be able to comprehend the message here. The emphasis is that, aside from being a divinitory tool, the Tarot has many levels of wisdom contained within it. There is a nicely done section on the origins of the Tarot, followed by Tarot's connection with the Golden Dawn.

Who am I?

Each month I am going to have one card from the Tarot talk to my readers. The card will in some way tell you something about itself and what it stands for.

I would like to have you the reader send in which card you think is speaking, and a short explanation of why you choose that card. In some instances, you may feel that more than one card is being represented.

In the following months newsletter, I will present all of my readers opinions, as well as a new card for that month.

In this manner, in real time, we can see the power (energy) behind the cards, and perhaps get a feel for how to use them in our lives.

Who am I? 7/01/03:

"Come and walk with me. Enjoy the sunlight and the breezes, the sense of rightness about the world. When you are with me, your worlds are in sync and your life flows freely."

These were the words of The World.

Who am I? 8/01/03

"I am one of the "little people" of the Tarot world. Walking with me can bring great sorrow, if that is what you choose. It can also act as a "time out" for you to gather your mental forces."

Note: In next months newsletter I will publish who my readers feel this description refers to. If you wish to remain anonymous please let me know, and I will honor that request. Give me the reasoning behind your thought - I think we will see that there can be more than one answer here. Perhaps this small exercise can be used to open us all to new ways of communicating with the Tarot. :)

Special Report: What I Did On My Toronto Tarot Symposium Vacation
By Gigi Miner

(Editor's note: I want to thank Gigi for gifting us with her review of the Toronto Tarot Symposium. Her words take those of us who were unableto attend right into the action!)

"There's the needle!" Thus far, I'd only seen it from across the water at Fort Niagara. Now, I was watching it grow larger through the car window. he excitement begins.

"There's the sign". Following the arrows, my husband and I head for the doors to Brennan Hall at the University of St. Michael's College. We climb the stairs and there is the registration table. Amy Lee-Rosenberg greets us and gives us our nametags. "I don't like nametags" I think to myself, and being ever rebellious at heart, I find a place for it other then around my neck.

We're a little early, so the octagon-shaped room is quiet except for the last minute preparations being made by well-attired wait-staff at the beverage table. Round tables are adorned with white and red linen. We find a spot in the back corner of the room and sip our sodas, although wine is available.

Soon, people begin to wander in. One table near the beverage table begins to fill with people. "You can come sit over here. We don't bite." I reply, "That's not what I hear. James says you all bite." One voice quips, "I'll bite you if you want me to." "Ellen?" I ask. A quizzical look comes over the face of Ellen Lorenzi-Prince. Ellen is the creator of Tarot of the Crone and her sense of humor is what I recognize first.

Introductions are made. Among my table-mates in addition to Ellen, are Rachel Pollack, Mary Greer, and Tom Tadfor-Little; I'm in good company. I introduce myself as Gigi Miner. I get many blank stares. Then I clarify that on the various lists I go by the name "Ladyfogg". "Oh." Now they know who I am.

"Tarot Of The Saints" is a deck that I have been wanting to work with for a long time - probably ever since it came out! I have been on internet e-lists with Robert Place, and found him to a a gentle, caring person carrying a great deal of wisdom within him. The deck reflect this - the cards are done in a gentle manner, very "clean", with nothing that will distract the eye from what it is supposed to see.

I want to share with you a snippet from the foreword, written by Robert V. Oneill (aka Bunny Bob), author of "Tarot Symbolism" and a keeper of wisdom himself.

"There is little, if any, consensus of opinion on the meaning of the Tarot symbols, and considerable room for personal meditation and interpretation. In this book, Place presents the results of his own personal explorations. Some of the interpretations may strike the reader as idiosyncratic and there is no need to accept everything as gospel. But the reader will find here a deep well of insight, challenging to one's intellect and inspiring to one's intuition."

I could not agree more! This is much more than a graceful deck with a nice book accompanying it. If one is to make best use of this deck, on all levels, read the accompanying book, "A Gnostic Book Of Saints", with an open mind and an open heart. You will find yourself on a journey that will open many doors of wisdom, and many levels of understanding.
