SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
NORTHERN NEW MEXICO SENIOR
MEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
One of the more important functions of our
Association is to seek out worthy students for our College Scholarship
Awards. To this end we have incorporated a separate 501 (C)(3) Not For
Profit Corporation named NNMSMGA-Scholarship Fund. The Scholarship Fund
raises monies from individual donations, donations from the Ladies
Bridge Group, and an annual raffle/auction. No Association funds are
spent in connection with the awarding of scholarships.
Each year the Scholarship Selection Committee
contacts Principals and Counselors of High Schools within our membership
boundaries for their cooperation in acquiring the names of worthy
graduating students. Final selection of recipients is determined by the
Committee based upon a point system grading the students for the
following:
Scholarship High School
Accomplishments Community service
Achievement Goals Rank within Graduating Class
Parental Support
Personal Reason for Interest in the
Scholarship (Interest in Golf, etc.)
The Scholarship Fund awards both one year and four
year awards, usually for $500 per year. Over the past years, the Fund
has paid the following amounts:
1991 $2,000 1992 -0- 1993 $2,000
1994 $2,000 1995 $2,500 1996
$2,000
1997 $5,000 1998 $4,500
1999 $4,500
2000 $5,500 2001 $7,500
2002 $8,000
2003 $8,000 2004 $10,000
2005 $12,000
2006 $16,000 2007 $20,000
2008 $19,000
2009 $20,000
Toward the
end of our season, each member will receive raffle tickets which support
the Scholarship Fund. While there is no requirement that members
participate in this fund raising, we encourage you to do so. The auction
and the drawing for the raffle are held in conjunction with the Annual
Banquet.
NNMSMGA -SCHOLARSHIP FUND, INC.
OPERATING PROCEDURES
PURPOSE The purpose of the
scholarship program is to recognize and promote scholastic excellence
among the youth of the NNMSMGA playing area
DESCRIPTION The
scholarships may consist of either one-time awards and/or four (4) year
awards. The type and number of each award is dependant upon funds
available.
COMMITTEE
The Scholarship Selection Committee shall
consist of at least four (4) members and shall be chaired by a member of
the Board of Directors. Other members shall be selected from the
membership of the Association.
FINANCIAL The scholarships shall be
funded by a raffle(s) conducted for that purpose plus other donations
from individuals or organizations. The total amount awarded shall not
exceed the amount collected in the prior year.
METHOD The
scholarships shall be awarded primarily on the basis of achievement. The
selection process shall be fair, objective and consistent, such as the
“grade card” system currently in use. In that system, an applicant is
“graded” in various areas of achievement utilizing a 1 to 10 point basis
in each area. Areas graded include Grade Point Average, SAT/ACT scores,
leadership, participation in activities, community service, letters of
recommendation, future plans and goals, and reasons why the applicant is
worthy of scholarship funds. Interest in golf and perceived need of the
applicant receive lesser weight in our current system.
Interviews with the applicants
and parents/guardians should complete the selection process. Only those
applicants assured of some type of scholarship funds as determined by
the grade card system used need be interviewed.
ELIGIBILITY
Eligibility for consideration for these
scholarships shall be limited to high school seniors graduating from
schools located within the NNMSMGA membership area, such area being
defined in the by-laws of the Association. The applicant must apply in
the manner prescribed by the selection Committee. Applications should
include information concerning each of the factors to be evaluated by
the Committee plus any other information the Committee deems necessary
to the selection process. Applicants receiving a four-year scholarship
must submit evidence of continued enrollment as a full-time student and
maintain a 2.5 GPA based on a 4.0 system of grading in order to receive
their subsequent yearly awards.
TIME FRAME Notices,
calling for applications, should be sent to all schools in the eligible
area prior to March 1st. The deadline for receiving
applications should be late April. The Committee should then meet to
select and interview the applicants in May before the completion of the
school year.
DECISIONS The
decisions of the Scholarship Selection Committee shall be based on the
best available information in order to select the most qualified
students. The decisions of the Committee are final.
