NNMSMGA HANDICAP SYSTEM MARCH, 1999; AMENDED JULY 22, 1999 HANDICAPS FOR MEMBERS OF THE NORTHERN NEW MEXICO SENIOR MEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION ARE ESTABLISHED IN ACCORDANCE WITH U.S.G.A. STANDARDS, USING THE SLOPE METHOD OF HANDICAPPING, EXCEPT AS MODIFIED HEREIN. The Slope Method of handicapping uses two numerical values, Course Rating and Slope Rating, to gauge the difficulty of each golf course for golfers of varying skill levels. The Slope Method handicap formula works by contrasting a golfer's posted scores (typically the best 10 of the latest 20 scores) with the associated Course and Slope Ratings to produce a Handicap Index, a number with one decimal place. This Handicap Index is then applied to a course-specific numerical table to give the golfer a course handicap for each course played. The course handicap is always a whole number. For Slope Handicapping, each golfer's "best 10 of last 20" posted scores are used in the calculation. If fewer than 20 scores are recorded, the following U.S.G.A.-prescribed table specifies how many best scores are used:
In your first 5 tournaments with the Association, your handicap will be your club handicap, or if you do not have an established club handicap, the Handicap Chairman will assign your NNMSMGA handicap based on the average score you shoot. Starting with your 6th tournament, the handicap will be computed by the U.S.G.A. handicap program used by the NNMSMGA, as indicated above. All tournament scores are adjusted for equitable stroke control as prescribed by U.S.G.A. rules and regulations (your "posted" score). Because the handicap program does not begin to compute the handicap index until after 5 scores have been entered, the program does not print a handicap card for the golfer's use until after the 5th score has been entered. * The Board has voted to keep in the handicap records only the last 2 previous years' scores, in order to keep all handicaps as current as possible. Therefore, those players who play less than 10 tournaments each year will always have a handicap based on the table above, rather than 10 of the last 20 scores. * Upon application of a member due to health reasons, the Handicap Committee may assign a temporary handicap based upon the following: A. Treat the person as a new player; or B. The Handicap Committee may, subject to Board approval, assign an index, such index being 80% of the difference between the current year's score vs. par. The assigned index would be used until five (5) new scores have been attained, which would then place the member's handicapping in the regular handicapping computation. * NNMSMGA Modifications On February 1, 2006 the NNMSMGA Board stated that the Open Flight for each tournament would consist of those players with a handicap index of 9.9 or lower and players who request to be placed in the Open Flight. All players requesting to be placed in the Open Flight will have their handicap calculated using a Handicap Index of 9.9. |
