Yet another one with a super-convoluted past. I don't think that this constitutes as a spoiler, but gomen if you think so.

Kaoru was actually a member of Uruha, or at least one of those training to be part of Uruha. However, later when Kurei kidnaps Yanagi and goes back on his promise to not harm her. Because Koganei treated Kurei like his brother, he felt VERY betrayed.

So after that, Koganei runs away and later sneaks into Urabatousatsujin. He takes the place of Fuuko in Team Hokage after she is (I shall not say why) indisposed. Why? Because he likes Yanagi. What is it about young helpless girls that attract all the men?

As to why Koganei was with Kurei in the first place, you'll have to read the manga. The anime didn't mention the reason at all. Of course, this being spoiler-free (or at least ATTEMPTING to be), isn't going to tell you anytime soon.

Kaoru's Kougan Anki
The first form Koganei's madogou is the Kougan Anki, also known as the elemental weapon of gold. The first form is the form he carries it around in. It's long, so he wraps it up so as to not attract attention to it.
The second form The second form of his weapon is the Ryu. This weapon is like a chain and sickle that Kaoru can throw out at opponents.
The third form The Kyoku is the third form and it looks like a giantic (and I mean gigantic. The entire weapon is bigger than Kaoru...) pair of scissors.
The fourth form This fourth form is like a huge boomerang that works like one as well. This is the Mikazuki. You wouldn't want the blade of it slicing across you.
The fifth form The fifth form is the An and is a bow and arrow.
There is a sixth form that is only mentioned in the anime, but seen in the manga. This is the Nothing (this is direct translation from Chinese, excuse me...) The Kougan Anki splits up and then attempts to assemble around the opponent. Very painful to look at, and I don't think it's that great to feel as well.
