dark blue
dark water: chapter two
dark blue
Mikagami sat silently at the table. The thick cigarette smoke and stink of beer permeated through the sickly sweet smell of his cocktail, and he wondered what he was doing here. He gazed around the seedy bar, his pale blue eyes flickering towards the group of rowdy men at the counter.
He was perusing the idea of going home when a man sat down before him, a little nervously. "Err... hello," the guy said, stammering a little. "May I buy you a drink?"
Mikagami cocked his head at the stranger, his voice bland and emotionless. "Does it occur to you that I'm male?"
The man, startled, looked up from the table. "I... I know that. I meant what I said."
The corners of Mikagami's mouth quirked up. "Okay. Why not?"
The other grinned, suddenly at ease. He called for the waiter to serve them another drink, and his hand reached up to tuck his longish hair behind his ear. Mikagami smiled at the sight of the three earrings that dangled from his earlobe. "Nice earrings."
"Thanks. You have a nice one as well."
Mikagami self-conciously touched the new ring that now adorned his ear. "It's new." He glanced up at the stranger under half-lidded eyes, his hair falling gently back down over his ear. "Fancy a tumble?"
The man choked on his drink. "What?"
"Aw come on, you must have had that running through your mind when you asked me for a drink."
"Well... yeah, I did, but you don't even know my name."
Mikagami leaned across the table to gaze into the man's widened brown eyes. "That never stopped me from getting what I wanted." He sat back down, chuckling at the man's expression.
"Well... my name is Kisho." Kisho sputtered a little.
Mikagami smiled, his lips curving in an irresistable smile. "Here alone?"
"Well, those men there are my friends..."
"Ah. So, do you want a one or one, or would your friends like a little fun as well?"
Kisho nearly spat out his drink and stared incredulously up at Mikagami, who was watching him, his chin resting on the heel of his palm. Kisho swallowed, mouth opening and closing like a little goldfish.
"I'm perfectly serious, Kisho-chan." The smile on his face never wavered.
"I'll... I'll ask them."
"Wonderful. I just need to get something, and I'll wait for you at the entrance," Mikagami got up to leave, black hair swishing.
"But wait, I don't even know your name!"
Mikagami half-turned, his eyes twinkling with a decidedly seductive glint. "Well, in this place, my name is Kage." He gave Kisho a slow wink before heading towards the exit.
The rest of the men stood nervously at the entrance as Mikagami crossed the road towards them. In his hand was a plastic bag, with two bottles of mineral water inside.
"Gee, what are those for?" Kisho asked.
"I always get thirsty after a strenuous activity. Don't you?" His mouth quirked up in a wry smile. "You can have a bottle."
He led them into a dark alley, with only a single streetlamp to provide light.
"Here, Kage?"
"Aa. Why not?"
"It's so... so... dark."
Mikagami laughed. "Well, I don't suppose you need light to see me by, don't you? You stand, I'll do it." He looked around the group. "One on one, or mass orgy?" He laughed again. The men looked at each other and mumbled their excuses to Kisho. "We'll wait in the shadows."
Kisho nodded nervously and his hands fumbled at his belt buckle. Mikagami cracked the seal on a bottle. He took a swig.
Kisho watched Kage drinking from the bottle, watched the sensous sight of Kage slowly swallowing the liquid. He gulped. Such a gorgeous sight, he thought. But suddenly, Kage pulled the bottle from his mouth, and the water swung out in a twinkling liquid arc.
Kisho expected to hear the splash of the water on the floor, but it never came. Instead, he felt the tip of the sword against his throat. And before he could speak, the blood frothed up to his mouth, and he choked upon it, falling to the ground. He couldn't say anything, but by the dim light, he saw Kage walking away from him, heard Kage calling out to his friends, watched Kage slice through all of them.
Inhale. Kill. Exhale. Next. Inhale. Kill. Exhale.
Kage walked towards him again, and he bent down to watch Kisho die with a clinical eye. "Why, Kage?" Kisho gasped his last words. Kage straightened, and as he did, Kisho could have sworn his eyes deepened to a dark blue.
"Life for life, this is the immutable law. Men like you killed my sister. And my name, is Kurai. Goodbye Kisho."
Blood stained the wall of the dead-end.
"Mikagami-sempai!" Yanagi came chasing up, her hair swinging, brown hair lightly catching the sunlight.
He waited for the younger girl, a feeling of possesiveness swelling up in him. "You... you dyed your hair black!" She stared more closely. "And pierced your ear! Twice!"
He shrugged. "To remind myself of something I have to do."
They headed towards the ice-cream shop, Mikagami staring stonily in front, Yanagi hesistantly following.
They sat down. Yanagi asked, "What do you have to remind yourself of, sempai?"
"Of the past."
"But don't you think that not thinking about it would be better for you?"
His eyes darkened visibly. "The past is a ghost that haunts you from the moment it exists until the moment you don't. It teaches you what you have done wrong and what you have done right. I did something wrong that I have to put right. And that is what I have to remind myself."
"But you have to free yourself from all that..."
"Yanagi, you don't know what it feels like. Time is a shackle you can't break, regret is something you can't live with. I have to do this. I have to avenge my sister's death." Something flashed in Mikagami's eyes, and Yanagi could have sworn that they turned one shade darker.
