My Trip to Britain

From April 25th to May 6th, I had the privledge to accompany my mother-in-law, Barbara, and my sisters-in-law Lanette and Elizabeth to Northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. We had a tremendous time. I hope to share some of those memories here with my photos.

We flew into Manchester early in the morning of April 26th. From here we drove to Haworth and toured the home of Charlotte and Emily Bronte. The Yorkshire moors were impressive and much wilder than I imagined they would be. From Haworth we drove on to York where we stayed the night. We had dinner that night with Elizabeth's friend from London. We ate at a place called Plunketts. It was there I discovered the joy of pub food. Throughout the trip I found the best food served in pubs. The next day we toured Yorkminster and walked around the city. Unfortunately my camera was not working at the time so I have no photos of Yorkminster or of that day.

Later that day we got into our car and drove from York to the Scottish border. We passed by the very industrial town of New Castle. By the time we reached the Scottish border we were on a narrow, winding road through the Cheviot Hills. The scenery was magnificent. That jaunt through the borderlands was one of the highlights of my trip. Unfortunately all the footpaths were closed due to foot and mouth disease, so hiking was out of the question.

We stayed at a nice small hotel in Melrose. The next day we viewed the ruined abby and shopped around the town.

That following afternoon we drove from Melrose to Edinburgh. We checked into our hotel and went sightseeing the next day.

Edinburgh Castle was an amazing sight worthy of anything I have ever seen in New Mexico or Colorado. The volcanic formation on which it stands is far more impressive than even the historic castle built on top of it.

It was sad to leave Edinburgh. I was only able to see the Royal Scottish Museum and Edinburgh Castle. There was so much I missed. I suppose I will have to see the rest when I return.
