CMJ NEW MUSIC REPORT - kerplunk review
growing up as regulars of the gilman
street warehouse and voracious readers of flipside, no doubt, green day
has put together a platter of wonderfully catchy, decidedly
melody-powered, punk rock fun.
together with bands like sweet baby, jawbreaker and field trip, the east
bay trio further establish suburban ca punk's notoriety, giving the area
a reputation for fun-loving if not hyperactive speed-pop.
the 12 chunks of fun on kerplunk! favor melody over speed metal
aggression and lyrics of love and confusion over explosive revolutionary
tracts. the hooks in these songs are as easy to find as a broken string
must be at a green day show.
keenly underscored by gleeful, chiming vocals and hurdle-jumping
basslines, green day's tunes stick in your head like cat hair on your
black tights. give these a whirl and find out why: "2000 light years
away," "welcome to paradise," "private ale,"
"android" and "words i might have ate." green day's
debut album may not break any new ground in the annals of punk rock, but
it's a worthy chapter in our book.
