On July, 12 the troops of the Zapadniy (Western) and Bryansk fronts took the offensive, and on July,15 the Central front troops began a big attack on a wide front towards the city of Orel. Next day the 4-th German tank army and the group "Kempf" began to retreat attacked by the Soviet troops, and the Voronezh and Stepnoy fronts continued to move forward.

The main task of the Russian troops was to destroy in a short time the Belgorod-Kharkov group of enemy troops and to liberate the cities of Belgorod and Kharkov. The plan of the Soviet Command was named "General Rumyantsev".

On August,5, 1943 early in the morning the Soviet troops broke into Belgorod and to the eveining the city was liberated. And this day the city of Orel was liberated too.

And late in the eveining the order of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief was broadcasted: "Today, August,5 at 12 p.m in Moscow in honour of this victorya salute of 20 salvoes from 120 guns will be fired". It was the first salute in Moscow in World War II, after this it became a tradition to fire a salute in honour of big victories of the Soviet Army. But that salute was the first one. So only two cities in Russia: Orel and Belgorod are often called "the cities of the first salute".
