16 November 2003 ~ I'm as tall as Batman...

Sorry for my lack of entries lately... I've been working on a couple of articles to publish in a couple of local newsmagazines, and a few essays to turn in as homework, and a few... yeah. If I finish any of them, and if any of them are good, I'll plug them in for the beginning of November...

Meanwhile... A little tale from the Produce Section...

So, Helena's fiancé, Jake, is a big old GEEK. In a sweet way, of course. He likes Star Trek, and Doctor Who, and role-playing. He makes Star Wars fan films. He knows the difference between DC Comics and Marvel Comics, and insists there's a quality difference. Or something. Anyway, Jake is a big old geek. A nerd, if you will.

Remarkably, Jake is usually capable of hiding this aspect of his personality underneath his wit and charm. He'll give you "The Eyebrow," and say, "hey babe... how YOU doin'?" -- and you'll never, ever guess that he can name all seven captains of the Enterprise in chronological order ("only four of them had TV shows based on them, though..."), and that he knows what the "T." stands for in "James T. Kirk." You'll just think he's a sexy, charming guy.

Well, last night, Jake had a grand opportunity to release his inner geek. Adam West, who played Batman in the 1960s' TV show, was hosting a comedy show in downtown Olympia, and Jake got to go. Before he left, though, he printed out two big photos of Batman on photo paper, for Mr. West to sign. Jake is a big old nerd. It's adorable.

Well, at 1:30 in the morning yesterday evening, as I was pulling the covers up around my chin to go to sleep, Jake bounded in to kiss me, and gleefully announced, "You know what, babe?! I'M AS TALL AS BATMAN!!!"

"Yeah? Really?"

"Yeah! I used to think he must be REALLY tall! Like, 6'5" or something! But... I am as tall as him!"

I smiled and congratulated him, and then selected, from a two-foot tall stack of books, something to read before falling asleep, knowing that I damn well have no business mocking anybody else's dorkiness...

Love,
~Helena*
