Your assignment for the week is to call up all of your friends, and make sure that absolutely every single one of them can identify at least one edible berry or plant native to his or her area. Make sure that he or she knows it is edible, and make sure he or she knows how to prepare at least one food item using this plant.
Because really, more people should be aware that food comes from yards, and fields, and forests, and not just from Wegman's, Price Chopper, Albertson's, Safeway, etc... The fewer people who know those sorts of things, the fewer who will evolve...
I recently discovered that a brilliantly intelligent friend of mine (who shall remain unnamed), who has lived much of his life in the Pacific Northwest, did not know that you could pick blackberries and eat them. Turns out, it had never even occurred to him until he saw me do it. My unnamed friend's ignorance on this subject is in no way reflective of the rest of his knowledge, but good GAHD, I thought everybody knew about blackberries!!!
Anyway, apparently not everybody does.
I encourage you to make sure all of your friends are aware of such simple, yet utterly delightful, pieces of wisdom.
