Herman O. Tafoya Sr., 76, a Bataan Death March survivor, member
of the 200th Coast Artillery, lifelong resident of Albuquerque,
and a notable APS and UNM educator for over 30 years, died
Wednesday, May 27, 1998. He is survived by his sons, Herman O.
Tafoya Jr., Brian E. Tafoya and wife, Nancy B., and Norman R.
Tafoya and wife, Dr. Anne T., all of Albuquerque; daughters,
Sharon T. Burner and husband, Dr. William L. Burner III of
Vienna, VA, Juliette T. Leverette and husband, Lt. Col. Gary L.
Leverette, U.S.A.F., of Albuquerque, and Susan T. Sullivan and
husband, Christopher Sullivan of Japan; grandchildren, Samuel
Tafoya, Brianne Tafoya, Jacob Tafoya, Barbara Burner, Guinevere
Burner, Alexander Burner, Camille Burner, Jonathan Leverette,
Benjamin Leverette, Russell Leverette, Andrew Leverette, Maya
Fuentes, Nicolas Tafoya, and Catherine Sullivan; three brothers,
Clarence C. Tafoya of Fremont, CA, Richard E. Tafoya, and Fred
L. Tafoya both of Albuquerque; one sister, Julia Hendren of
Albuquerque. Mr. Tafoya was preceded in death by his wife, Edna
in April 1995; and by three brothers, Henry, Joe ‘Morey’, and
Alfonso. A Memorial Service will be held at French Mortuary,
University Blvd Chapel, 1111 University Blvd NE at 11:00 a.m.
Wednesday, June 24th. Burial will follow the service at 2:00
p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
Pallbearers will be Herman O. Tafoya, Jr., Brian E. Tafoya,
Norman R. Tafoya, Clarence C. Tafoya, Richard E. Tafoya, Sr.,
and Fred L. Tafoya. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. James H.
McCahon, Dr. Fred Carrillo, Silas Barela, Gilbert Naranjo,
