The Museum was started by members of the New Mexico National Guard and interested citizens shortly after the end of World War II.
The central focus of the Museum is the men of the 200th Coast Artillery Regiment which was sent to the Philippine Islands early in WWII to furnish anti-aircraft support to Clark Air Field and Fort Stotsenberg. The Regiment was divided to form the 515th Coast Artillery Regiment while in the Philippines. Both of the Regiments were lost to enemy action on Bataan when the Japanese overran the Philippines in 1942. The 200th consisted of 1,800 men when deployed. After three and one half years of captivity, less than half were to return to the United States.
Located at 1050 Old Pecos Trail in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Museum is housed in the original Armory from which the 200th was processed for entry into active service in 1941. The Museum operates under the auspices of a small non-profit foundation - The Military Historical Foundation of New Mexico, Inc.
The Museum and Library serve as a “Learning Center” for all who choose to avail themselves of the materials located there. They work closely with various public and private school systems and especially welcome youth groups.
The Museum and Library are open from 9:00am to 4:00pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; Saturday from 9:00am to 1:00pm. Mondays are reserved for group tours. There is no admission to the Museum or Library, however, donations are accepted and are greatly appreciated.
For the past several years the Museum and Library have experienced steady growth, refinement and acquisition of truly fine artifacts and memorabilia. Current exhibits encompass military eras from the 16th Century through the Gulf War (Desert Storm).
The museum is located 10 minutes off I-25 at the Old Pecos Trail Exit - and eight blocks from the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Stop by and enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee while you browse through history in a relaxed atmosphere. |
