From the prison camps in the Philippines and Japan to the cities and towns of New Mexico, the soldiers and their families survived. The soldiers strengthened by their common identity as New Mexicans, survived by reminding each other of their families, friends, and common experiences back home.

Albuquerque’s Andy Miller, 19 AF Squadron 20 Group; former Commander American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor; 20+ years National Historian American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor; Director Bataan-Corregidor Memorial Foundation of New Mexico Inc.; identified himself among these men. In front of the cement column in the upper right, he is the third man straight down and in line with that column with a large bandage on his head. Mr. Miller died in June, 2008.
