Moist's Musical History

Did you know that "Machine Punch Through" and "Freaky Be Beautiful" was written even before Moist was a year old? The band formed in 1993 and made their first self-titled indie album in a few days with Kevin Hamilton and used it to get gigs, press and A&R interest across the country. By the end of 1993, Moist had landed a deal with EMI Music Publishing, recorded Silver, and had fulfilled its initial goals. Silver's songs were a mix of songs from the their first self-titled indie album plus 5 other songs. The video, "Push" was released and MuchMusic helping them along, they sold 5,000 in six weeks!! "It was fun being an independent band," comments Paul, "because we learned so much and were on top of everything going on. But as soon as you sign with a major label, you have to start letting go and let a group of people who share your visions push it to the next level."

In 1994, Moist signed with EMI Music Canada worldwide. It sold close to 4 times platinum in Canada only and this album cost less than $5,000 to make. This got Moist a Juno award for Best New Band. "That definitely legitimized it for my parents," says Paul.

Moist had been on a three year tour around the world. They did a U.S. tour with Collective Soul, opened for Green Day, Live and Red Hot Chili Peppers. A private concert was held in Tuktoyaktuk, NWT (NorthWest Territories) which had perfomers like Hole and Metallica. "Push became a top 20 single in the UK and a gold record in Thailand spun Moist to star status. "I've never been photographed so much in my life as I was in Bangkok," says Paul.

The band relocated to Montreal shortly after their tour ended and began to settle down and write for the next album which was MoistCreature, their first official major label-funded album. "We had been writing," says David, "but we write in a lot of pieces, so we basically needed to assemble them, just jam things out to figure out what we like and what we don't like. We're a song-based band. We always have been. I just think we've become much better doing it. Only time will tell how they stand up, but I'm more interested in how I will feel about them in the years to come, than other people's opinions."

Creature was produced and engineered by Paul Northfield, who also did I Mother Earth and Suicidal Tendencies. at Morin Heights and Silent Sound in Quebec, Canada. The album was mixed by Northfield, except for "Gasoline" and "Hate" which were done by enigeer Claus Frostell, and "Ophelia" and "Tangerine" were done by Tim Palmer, who also has worked with Pearl Jam's 10, Stabbing Westward's Wither Blister Burn + Peel.
