Mr. and Mrs. Temp

Keegan sat sideways in a chair, reading a magazine and listening to a portable CD player. She slowly chewed a piece of gum and waited for her new parents to arrive at the police station. That morning Daniel and Sara Temp had arrived at the Albuquerque International Sunport in Albuquerque New Mexico, 147 miles from where Keegan's house stood at 1421 Park Street Angel Fire, New Mexico. The average sized tan house was the fourth one on the street. It had large trees and lots of flowers. It had been decided by her newly appointed social worker that her new parents would move from their home in Denver Colorado to where the North's house was, so that Kee wouldn't have to move at all. Mr. and Mrs. Temp were glad to do this. They hadn't had much family in Denver, and since they had been told that they couldn't have children, when they heard that there was a 14 year old girl with no family to take her in, they had decided instantly that Keegan would soon be a part of their much coveted family.

When Koletrain and Catherine North had died, their youngest daughter had been devastated, therefore, she was sent to live with the only family that had room for her, her godparents, Laura and James White, and their two sons. Keegan wasn't half as broken up about her parent's deaths as her younger sister Devrah had been, and since there was no one with which she could live, she was assigned a social worker, and put up for adoption. It wasn't even a month that she was living at a group home when there was a call from Judy Croft, her social worker, saying that an appropriate family had been found, and they would be coming to live with her. All of this led up to the morning that Keegan Mercedes North was sitting in the cushioned chair at the police station awaiting the arrival of her new family. Knowing full well that the Temps' plane landed at 7:00 am and there was a three hour drive from Albuquerque to Angel Fire, Keegan had awakened at 8:00 and gotten a ride to the place she sat in now at 8:30. Judy was chatting with one of the officers who was on break at the moment and both anticipated the arrival of the Temps, which would have to be soon, seeing as it was almost 10:30. As Keegan dully placed her 'Teen magazine on top of a growing stack of discarded reading materials, the main doors of AFPD flew open and a young-looking couple stepped in. The man looked like he was in his late twenties, the woman in her mid-twenties. They were both dressed as if they were on vacation, wearing blue jeans and light T-shirts. Keegan recognized them from the photographs that she had been given as Dan and Sara Temp and made the instantaneous decision that they were easy-going and that they would be well-loved parents. Sara and Dan came over and shook Judy's hands. Keegan stood up and stayed back near the chair until they were done greeting each other, at which time Judy stepped aside and motioned for Keegan to step up and greet her new parents. Kee stepped forward a few steps and Sara opened her arms invitingly. Keegan stepped forward more confidently. She fell into her new mother's arms, and felt the warm embrace around her. Mrs. Temp was very thin and she smelled of lilacs. Next Keegan hugged Dan. He was also very thin, and muscular. After the couple had greeted their new daughter, Mrs. Croft took Dan into a room and Sara helped Kee get her things. They loaded these into the dark blue Saturn that sat out in front of the police station. Keegan could tell already that she would like her new life with the Temps.
