Jessica
|
Chapman |
10 |
A site near the
American air base at Lakenheath,
Suffolk, has become the centre of
what is now a double murder
investigation.
As an official "scene of
crime" where the clues to who
killed Holly
Wells and Jessica
Chapman may be found, police have
been treating
the site with extreme
sensitivity, determined not to
contaminate the immediate area or
miss a shred of evidence that might
prove crucial. Recovery of any
material that would yield the DNA
of their killer - clothing, blood
or hair - is an obvious aim.
Unusually, the Home Office
pathologist Nat Carey conducted an
initial examination of the two
bodies in situ yesterday afternoon,
but the work was hampered by
thunderstorms and driving rain.
Another complication for the
forensic teams has been the thick
undergrowth around the bodies,
which were found at 12.15pm
on
Saturday by two men and a woman
walking their dog.
Ian Huntley, 28, has been
charged with the murders of Holly
Wells and Jessica Chapman, both 10,
from Soham, Cambs, whose bodies
were discovered on August 17 2002.
His girlfriend, Maxine Carr, 25,
has been charged with perverting
the course of justice. This case is
still under investigation...(see

Christi |

Aug. 2000 -- Two days into her
second-grade year, Christi was found
strangled and her 12-year-old girlfriend
raped in an abandoned
rock house in Oilton. Standing over them
in a back bedroom was Robert Wayne Rotramel, 19, authorities said.
Rotramel has been charged in the murder and
is awaiting trial. Since the murder, it
was learned Rotramel had a history of
sex offenses when he was a teen-ager.
A judge allowed
Rotramel's juvenile records to be
released following an outcry over the
murder. The records show that at age 13,
Rotramel was convicted of forcible
sodomy.

Opal
Jo |
Jennings |
6 |
March 26, 1999-Little Opal
Jennings was at her grandmother's
house and playing in the front yard
with two other, younger children,
when a stranger appeared. Without
warning, the man punched Opal in
the chest, stunned her, and carried
her away.
SAGINAW,
Texas, Nov. 9, 1999 - A grand jury
indicted Richard Lee Franks, 30,
for the abduction of Opal Jennings.
Franks, a convicted child molester,
has been jailed on $1.5 million
dollar bail since mid-August on
charges of aggravated
kidnapping and indecency with a
child in connection with Opal's
case.
According to an affidavit,
investigators received a tip from
Franks' probation officer which
ultimately led to his arrest. The
probation officer told police that
Franks resembled the description of
the kidnapper, that he drove a car
similar to the one used in the
abduction and that Franks had cut
his hair soon
after Opal disappeared.
In August, Franks was arrested on
an outstanding traffic warrant.
Police say, when questioned about
Opal's disappearance, Franks told
investigators that the little girl
got into his car, but according to
Franks, he dropped Opal off at her
home and that she was safe and
sound.
Opal Jennings has never been found.

Ramirez
|
10 |
Feb. 14, 1997 -- The
Kings County panel chose the death
penalty over life in prison without
parole for Gene EstellMcCurdy in
the suffocation of Maria. Superior
Court Judge Peter Schultz must
review the verdict before deciding
whether to accept the jury's
recommendation.
Maria disappeared after walking
from home to a grocery store to buy
a can of tuna.
McCurdy testified
during his trial that he was at the
Food King shopping center renting
adult movies at the same time Maria
went there. But he denied
kidnapping or killing her.
The prosecution's main
witness, Mychael Jackson, said he
saw McCurdy put Maria in his pickup
in the shopping center parking lot.
Jackson said he realized that the
man he saw was McCurdy after seeing
television news video of the
defendant after his arrest.
The defendant's sister
testified that he molested her
frequently when they were children.
She was the second of
three girls from the area who were
slain during February or March in
three consecutive years.
Ten-year-old Angelica
Ramirez of Hanford disappeared from
a swap meet in Visalia and her
strangled body was found in a canal
near Pixley, about 25 miles north
of the spot where Maria's body was
found.
Traci Rene Conrad, 11,
of Hanford, disappeared last Feb.
25. Her body was found stuffed in a
pottery kiln at the home of two
friends. Their father, Kevin Duane
Galik, has been charged with her
slaying.
DNA testing cleared
McCurdy in the death of Angelica,
and he was in jail awaiting trial
when Traci Rene was killed.

Beverly |

TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- A man whose
testimony helped result in a murder
conviction and death sentence later
admitted committing the crime
himself, according to testimony in
a hearing that could result in a
new trial.
Oscar "J.R." Patterson III was
convicted in February 2000 of
first-degree murder in the death of
15-year-old Tiffiany Beverly
of Broken Arrow. Tiffiany
disappeared in May 1997; her
remains
were recovered in a Wagoner County
field in June 1998.

sexually assaulted the girl
and then killed her because he was
afraid she would tell her
mother or law enforcement officers.
Patterson, now 41, has
insisted he is innocent. |

Sandra |
Astorga |

May 2, 2000 --
Dean Eric Dunlap, a former Victorville
resident, faces charges stemming
from the 1992 kidnap, rape and
murder of a 9-year-old San
Bernardino girl after a DNA sample
tied him to the crime.
Dunlap is suspected of
kidnapping Sandra Astorga from San
Bernardino on Jan. 10, 1992. Her
body was found Jan. 30. Eight
months after Sandra disappeared,
Dunlap pleaded guilty to molesting
his girlfriend’s 12-year-old
daughter. Upon his release from
prison four years later, he
submitted a DNA sample, which was
entered into a statewide database.
That sample matched
semen samples taken from a green
T-shirt found near Sandra’s body
and a pair of panties found near
her book bags, sheriff’s officials
testified.
Dunlap could face
the death penalty if convicted on
all charges, including special
circumstances of kidnapping with
intent to rape. |

Rosemary
|
Papper |
8 |
Feb. 15, 2000 -- Thirty
years after the "Babes in the Wood"
murders of two young playmates,
their
grief-stricken mothers saw a
pedophile killer finally confess
his guilt to a court.
Ronald Jebson, 61, also known as
Harper, had kept his evil secret
for decades while serving a life
sentence for murdering another
child - eight-year-old Rosemary
Papper - (Angel on
page 529.) four years
after the deaths of Susan
Blatchford, 11, and Gary Hanlon,
12, in March 1970.
But while in jail, he told a prison
officer he knew who was responsible
for their deaths and police
subsequently reopened the case in
1996.
Jebson tried to implicate
Rosemary's parents in the unsolved
crime and Susan's body was exhumed
in order to carry out scientific
tests.
But after four years of painstaking
police investigation, detectives
broke down Jebson's story and he
confessed.
During the trial families of the
victims heard how Susan and Gary
were last seen playing happily
playing near their Enfield homes.
Jebson had been driving in the area
and enticed the children into his
car.
After plying them with drink and
cannabis in Epping Forest, near
London, Jebson sexually assaulted
Susan and then turned his
attentions to Gary.
When the boy bravely tried to fight
him off, Jebson strangled both
children and dumped their bodies in
a hide he had built in the woods.
Jebson kept the evil secret to
himself for three decades.

previous pedophile offences... |

Roxanne
|
Doll |
7 |
The
state Supreme Court yesterday
overturned the death sentence of
Richard Mathew Clark, who
kidnapped, raped and murdered
7-year-old Roxanne Doll in 1995.
In
its 5-3 decision, the court ruled
that the jury deciding whether
Clark should be executed should not
have heard details of his previous
crime -- specifically, that the
victim of his 1988
unlawful-imprisonment conviction
was also a little girl.
A Snohomish County jury convicted
him in April 1997 and, in a special
sentencing hearing, imposed the
death penalty. His attorneys had
argued against letting jurors hear
any details of his previous
conviction in his sentencing
hearing, but Judge Richard Thorpe
allowed testimony that the victim
was a 4-year-old neighbor girl.
Jurors did not hear what Clark was
accused of doing in that case:
abducting the girl and tying her up
in his garage, where her mother
later found her crying and
partially undressed but physically
unharmed. |
