1988-Canada- Joseph Fredericks, who
raped and killed a child, deserves
no sympathy and got none from the
start of his life.
Joseph Roger Fredericks was a
psychopathic pedophile.
A psychopath has no conscience, no
empathy, no capacity to love. A
pedophile wants sex with children.
The psychopath is formed first. The
formula is not complicated. "If you
really want to create a psychopath,
take an infant at birth, move him
through a dozen or so foster homes
in the first year of his life and
you'll produce one," said
psychiatrist Elliott Barker. He was
testifying at an inquest into the
murder of an 11-year-old boy,
committed by Fredericks in 1988.
That boy was Christopher
Stephenson. He had gone to a mall
in Brampton with his mother. He
waited in the corridor while she
slipped into a shop to buy ribbon.
In the short moments that she was
gone, Fredericks abducted the boy
at knifepoint, then raped,
strangled and stabbed him.
This spring, a piece of legislation
called Christopher's Law passed
third and final reading at Queen's
Park. It will be some months before
it's up and running, but the way
has been cleared for Canada's first
sex offender registry.
Fredericks won't be on it. A fellow
inmate hacked him in the chest with
a pair of shears at Kingston
Penitentiary in January, 1992. No
one came forward to claim his body.
He was unwanted in death and in
birth.
Fredericks was born in Ottawa in
February, 1943, to Rosa Anna
Poirier. He was the 11th of her 13
children. She was described as
slow, unpredictable and excitable,
with no morals. It's not clear who
his father was, either an alcoholic
who denied paternity or a man who
served a jail term for assaulting a
15-year-old girl.
The files of the Children's Aid
Society of Ottawa noted, "The
entire family is either defective
or of borderline intelligence...
The family is considered almost the
worst in the district of Ottawa."
Fredericks did not stay in that
family long. His mother sent her
infant son to Children's Aid and
the boy began bouncing from one
foster home to another.
In 1991, Saturday Night magazine
ran a piece called Frankenstein's
Orphan.
"Joe Fredericks' parents are, in
fact, us, the tax-paying public:
His many mothers were our public
agencies and experts. He spent his
childhood in foster homes, his
adolescence in an institution for
the severely retarded, 24 years of
his adulthood in a hospital for the
criminally insane, and his middle
age in Ontario's prisons. 'It is as
if Joe was left as a baby on Dr.
Frankenstein's doorstep,'" says a
lawyer who has worked with him.
"The unwanted baby grew into an
empty, destructive man, afflicted
by two of the most untreatable
pathologies known to forensic
psychiatry: pedophilia and
psychopathy. Then he walked out of
Frankenstein's laboratory and made
wreckage of several young lives."
Fredericks never stayed in a foster
home long. In an essay written when
he was 32, he described "playing
doctor" with a little girl in a
foster home when he was five.
"I never found out if I was moved
because they just could not keep me
or if they found out what I did to
the little girl."
He skipped school. He ran away. He
set fire to one foster family's
barn, stole a gun from another.
At 10, he was expelled from Grade
3. Children's Aid could find no one
to take him. At 11, they put him in
the Ontario Hospital in Smiths
Falls, a centre for the mentally
retarded and severely handicapped.
Four of his sisters were residents
there.
He was soon having sex with other
boys at the institution. In his
essay, he wrote: "Sexuality was a
need that needed to be filled two
to three times a day. Most of my
partners were willing, except two
or three boys who were forced into
sexually acting out with me."
At Smiths Falls they determined he had an IQ of only 73 . But the tests
were in English, and his first language was French. Decades later, other
tests showed his intelligence was average to bright.
When he was 20, he escaped from the
Oak Ridge facility in
Penetanguishene. In less than two
days of freedom, he raped two boys
at knifepoint and fondled a
six-year-old girl. He couldn't be
charged, because he was already
incarcerated under the Ontario
Mental Health Act.
But in the 1980s, the act changed
and it got harder to hold people
against their will.
Fredericks was not considered
legally insane and was out of
prison on mandatory supervision
when he murdered Christopher 12
years ago.
"He was such a nice kid," said
Fredericks after his confession.
"Why did he have to die?"
That crime made Fredericks
infamous. But as a profile of a
pedophile, he is the exception.
Most molesters don't look like
villains.
"We think of these things as being
committed by someone who is sick,
retarded, bizarre and strange and
think you ought to be able to spot
them on the street. But that isn't
the case." So said Hamilton
psychiatrist Ken Finkel when we spoke to him five years ago about the
phenomenon of people being so willing to defend a convicted pedophile.
A Stoney Creek man had been found
guilty of five sex charges
involving young hockey players. Yet
49 friends and family members wrote
glowing endorsements of him.
Refusing to believe that a highly
esteemed member of the community
could be capable of molesting
children is a common phenomenon,
Finkel said.
"It's so disturbing because it
could be anyone, a neighbour, a
family member, a minister, a
teacher, a doctor, anyone who has
access to children."
So the citizens on Ontario's new
registry of sex offenders will come
from all walks of life. The
province estimates there will be
2,000 new names to be added each
year.
Pedophilia
Pedophilia is a desire to have sex
with children 13 or younger. They
may use force or develop
complicated techniques to get
access to children -- winning the
trust of a child's mother, marrying
a woman with an attractive child,
trading children with other
individuals with pedophilia.
Psychotherapy and drugs have been
used to try to alter the sex drive,
but most pedophiles don't respond
to treatment. |

|
(7/17/02) — After two years, there's
justice and vindication for the parents
of a 12-year-old girl who was raped and
murdered in Montgomery County.
Wednesday was an emotional day for the
parents of Christina Neal. It took a few
hours for a jury of eight men and four
women to hand out the death sentence to
her killer, Jonathan Green.
"We're very grateful for the jury's
verdict and we think justice was done
and we're very pleased with the
results," said Prosecutor Mike Grissin.
The prosecution's last words and final
arguments to the jury were that it was
their job to determine how much or what
the life of Christina Neal was worth.
The jury decided in four and a half
hours that Jonathan Green would pay for
Christina's life with his life.
Christina's mom and dad were allowed to
make a statement to the man who raped
and killed their daughter.
"I hope he doesn't ever forget the smell
of Christina's dead composing body,"
said the victim's mother, Laura Neal.
"Because I won't."
"I just basically told him that he had
no right to kill our daughter and that
there's no reason for it," said the
victim's father, Victor Neal.
Out in the hallway, one of Jonathan
Green's relatives broke down in sobs.
Then the convicted killer was put in
chains and led away. His family was too
overwrought to speak on camera.
"We live in a society where we are no
worse than the criminal we're putting
away," said the Green's pastor, Lanzo
McShan. "Putting a man to death without
an eyewitness is barbaric."
The victim's parents say this does bring closure to their life and they
don't have to worry about Jonathan Green any more |

SHELTON -- A registered sex
offender has been charged with
first-degree murder in the rape
slaying of a local high school
sophomore who died of pelvic
injuries one day after she was
attacked.
Joseph Rosenow, 46, of Hoodsport
was charged Thursday in the death
of 15-year-old Jennie Osborn, a
friend of his daughter.
Mason County Superior Court Judge
Toni Sheldon ordered Rosenow held
on $1 million cash-only bail. His
arraignment was set for March 15.
Thursday's proceeding had been
scheduled for Wednesday, but the
courthouse was closed after the
earthquake.
In
addition to first-degree murder,
Rosenow is charged with
second-degree murder, first- and
second-degree rape, first- and
second-degree kidnapping,
second-degree assault and
third-degree rape of a child.
Under the three-strikes law, "He
would be subject to life in prison
if he was convicted of any of
them," county Prosecutor Gary
Burleson said.
In
1993, he was convicted in Pierce
County of raping a stranger at
knifepoint. He spent less than a
year behind bars. In 1999, he was
convicted of sexually attacking an
acquaintance at knifepoint and
choking her until she was
unconscious. He was released six
months ago after eight months in
prison.
Prosecutors had considered charging
Rosenow with aggravated
first-degree murder -- the only
charge that carries the death
penalty in Washington state -- but
there was no evidence immediately
available to suggest the death was
premeditated, Burleson said.
"As a matter of fact, after he
raped her, he brought her back for
help," the prosecutor said
Thursday. |

AIKEN, S.C. -- A man who admitted
he raped and killed a 6-year-old
boy told a judge he deserved to die
for his crime.
"I
think it would be disrespectful to
the family and disrespectful to the
whole world if you did not give me
the death
penalty," William "Junior" Downs
said.
Circuit Judge Casey Manning agreed,
sentencing Downs, 34, to death
Thursday for the murder of Keenan
O'Mailia.
The sentence followed several
unusual hearings over the past two
weeks where Downs left no doubt he
wanted to be sent to death row. He
pleaded guilty to murder June 13,
which meant under South Carolina
law Manning would decide if he got
life in prison without parole or
death.
The body of the mostly naked North
Augusta boy was found in April 1999
covered with debris. He had been
missing since the evening before,
when he was riding his bicycle
along a dirt path near his home.
Downs said he stopped the victim
along the path, asking him his name
before throwing him to the ground
and strangling him.
Downs returned the next morning to
dump the boy's body into the
Savannah River, but he left when a
woman near the park told him police
were looking for a missing boy.
Augusta, Ga., prosecutors say Downs
also faces the death penalty if
they can convict him of raping and
killing 10-year-old James Porter a
decade ago . |

VANCOUVER - A Vancouver jury convicted Shane
Ertmoed of first-degree murder Thursday in the death of 10-year-old
Heather Thomas of Surrey.
Ertmoed, 24, now faces a maximum life sentence without parole
eligibility for 25 years. The jury deliberated only five hours.
Calling the crime "horrific," Justice Wally Oppal of the B.C. Supreme
Court said a first-degree conviction meant the jury believed Ertmoed
intended and carried out Heather's murder, along with sexual assault.
FROM NOV 4, 2001: Neighbours react to arrest in B.C. girl's murder
After the verdict, Ertmoed told the court there had been a "miscarriage
of justice."
"You murdered a 10-year-old child just to satisfy your own sexual
desire," responded the judge.
In an earlier confession, Ertmoed said he strangled the young girl and
dumped her body in a lake. He later retracted the confession, claiming
the RCMP manipulated him.
But the Crown prosecutor urged the jury to convict Ertmoed because in
his confession, he appeared to know too many details of the crime.
Heather disappeared Oct. 1, 2000, at her father's suburban Surrey
townhouse. Ertmoed lived nearby. |

TORONTO Sat, 21 Jun 2003- Police in Toronto
on Friday arrested a 35-year-old man and charged him in connection with
the killing of 10-year-old Holly Jones.
Police Chief Julian Fantino told a news conference that Michael Briere,
35, has been charged with first-degree murder.
He will appear in court Saturday morning.
"Hopefully this arrest will bring some closure to Holly's family,
friends and the community as a whole," he said.
Briere, a software developer, was picked up by police early Friday
outside a home in Holly's west-end neighbourhood. He is now in custody
at a Toronto police station.
He has an apartment within a few blocks of Holly's house.
Police aren't releasing a photo of the suspect, and Fantino asked the
media not to publish any images of him that they get hold of on their
own. He said the investigation is ongoing, and investigators are still
hoping the public can provide more information about him.
Staff Insp. Bruce Smollet, who has been one of the leading officers in
the investigation, went to the home of Holly's parents at about 9 a.m.
Friday.
Holly was abducted in broad daylight on May 12 within blocks of her
home.
Police say Briere lives along the path the 10-year-old likely took as
she walked home from a friend's house.
The next day, her remains were found in two locations on the city's
waterfront.
Police have said all along they had strong evidence they believed would
lead them to the killer. They have repeatedly swept the neighbourhood
and sought the public's help in their search.
A task force was struck to chase down the killer, and Fantino said at
any given time 300 people were working on the case.
"By all accounts, this investigation marks in many ways the benchmark of
excellence," he said.
Fantino refused to discuss with reporters many aspects of the
investigation, including requests for DNA samples. |

Albuquerque, NM 07/21/2003- Police say a
registered sex offender has confessed to strangling a teenage girl to
death and then hiding her body at Albuquerque’s Sunshine Theater.
Dominic Akers, 22, was arrested Saturday after police found the girl’s
body where Akers had told police he had hidden her, according to an
affidavit filed in court.
Akers worked as a custodian at the downtown theater.
Investigators have not positively identified the girl’s body, but
believe it is 16-year-old Marissa
Mathy-Zvaifler of Santa Fe. She
disappeared from the Sunshine Theater on Wednesday night during a
concert there. Friends say a man was seen with her as she went upstairs.
Sources close to the investigation tell Eyewitness News 4 that Akers
admitted he went upstairs with the girl during Wednesday’s concert. He
claimed the two had a sexual encounter, during which he said he became
angry and strangled her to silence her screams, sources say.
Sources also say the 380-pound Akers confessed to dragging the girl’s
body down to another floor and stuffing her into a hole in the wall.
Police say Akers moved a vending machine to cover up the hole.
After telling his parents, investigators say Akers’ father turned him
in.
Akers is charged with murder, kidnapping, tampering with evidence and
aggravated battery. He was convicted for criminal sexual contact of a
minor about a year ago. |

Jennifer Lee |
Gravell |
9 |
FORT STOCKTON TEXAS- A Pecos County jury took
less than 30 minutes Thursday to convict Melvin Wayne White of the 1997
capital murder of Jennifer Lee Gravell.
White, 49, killed the 9-year-old Ozona girl in August 1997, then dumped
her bound, beaten and sexually abused body behind a water storage tank
on Texas Highway 137. The case is being tried in Pecos County on a
change-of-venue motion. Dottie Elrod, Jennifer's grandmother, reacted
visibly to the jury's decision, holding a tear-stained tissue over her
nose and mouth as the verdict was read. Tears dropped to her lap, and
her chin quivered.
"We're happy to get this first step done," Elrod said later outside the
courtroom. "It's been long and drawn out, and it's opened up the wounds
again. But we're going through it to make sure he never
hurts another child or family." Ozona and other communities have been
supportive of the Gravell family since Jennifer disappeared on
Aug. 4, 1997.
``It's not just Ozona, but (San) Angelo, Sonora, Fort Stockton. They say
it takes a village to raise a child. All of the villages have been there
for us,'' Elrod said. She said Ozona continues to be a community where
neighbor helps neighbor. ``You'd think that would be gone now, but it's
not. It's still there,'' Elrod said.
In his closing argument, 112th District Attorney Ori White, who is not
related to the defendant, asked jurors to remember the gruesome story
that had unfolded since testimony began Monday and to find Melvin White
guilty of capital murder.
``On August 9th, 1997, Jennifer would have been 10 years old,'' Ori
White told the jurors. ``I wish she was alive. I wish you didn't have to
be here. I wish I didn't have to call her mom up to the
stand.'' As he addressed the jury, the prosecutor once again showed them
evidence in the case: Melvin White's tennis shoes, the child-size black
sandals, the black electrical tape with strands of blond hair entangled,
an adult-size sock found dangling at the child's neck and the photograph
taken of Jennifer and her little brother, Bubba, at an Ozona drugstore
the day she disappeared.
Ori White reminded the jury that a neighbor had testified seeing the
defendant wearing tennis shoes like the ones entered into evidence
during a neighborhood gathering the night Jennifer disappeared.
The district attorney asked the jury to recall Eddie Galindo testifying
that he saw Melvin White in his truck with someone with blond hair late
on Aug. 4, 1997, at an Ozona-area roadside park. He asked the jury to
think about the four-hour interview Texas Ranger Jerry Byrne conducted
with the defendant the day after Jennifer's disappearance.
``Melvin White made her a joke and called her a woman,'' Ori White said,
paraphrasing Byrne's testimony. ``(Byrne) had tears in his eyes when he
said, `But she was just a baby." Ori White, his strong voice
occasionally quivering, said the blond-haired girl reminded him of a
little butterfly who flew by too quickly.
``For murder, though it have no tongue, will speak,'' Ori White said,
quoting Shakespeare.
His closing presentation also included additional photographs of the
recovery of Jennifer's body and her autopsy. As each photograph was
placed on the overhead projector, Melvin White glanced up at the screen,
then back down at his hands on top of the defense table. During his
final summation, Melvin White's court-appointed defense attorney, Kirk
Hawkins of San Angelo, reminded jurors that they must base their verdict
on belief beyond a reasonable doubt.
The jury, which had heard Melvin White confess to murdering the child
during an Aug. 5, 1997, taped interview with law-enforcement
investigators, had the option of finding White not guilty or guilty of
either murder or capital murder.
In his instructions to the jury, 112th District Court Judge Brock Jones
said that murder occurs when a person intentionally causes the death of
an individual. The jury could find the defendant guilty of capital
murder if they found beyond a reasonable doubt that Melvin White
intentionally murdered Jennifer Gravell ``in the course of either
committing or attempting to commit aggravated sexual assault, or in the
course of either committing or attempting to
commit kidnapping.'' Thursday's verdict concluded the first phase of
Melvin White's capital murder trial. The punishment
phase of the trial begins at 9 a.m. Monday in the Pecos County Judicial
Building. |
