children daily.

Although the Justice Department will not quote firm statistics in
child abduction cases, a Justice report put together 12 years ago
said acquaintances were responsible for 27 percent of kidnappings,
strangers were responsible 24 percent of the time, and family
members 49 percent of the time. However, kidnappings by
acquaintances are by far the most likely to result in violence--24
percent.

In a country with some 59 million children, abductions by a
stranger are perhaps the most terrifying of crimes. There are about
114,600 stranger abductions attempted each year (about 134 a day),
and about 3,200 to 4,600 are successful. Of those, about 200 to
300, are what the FBI calls "stereotypical" kidnappings, where a
child is gone overnight, transported over some distance, intended
to be kept by the perpetrator or even killed.
"Violent child victimizers were substantially more likely than
adult victimizers to have been physically or sexually abused when
they were children."
