6The Readers Forum Dear Editor, There are 137 living Medal Of Honor recipients listed in the Society Of the Medal Honor association as of April 13th 2003. Three of those live in Louisiana and they are; World War Two veteran Jefferson J. Deblanc, born February 15th 1921 in Lockport Louisiana, Marine, living in St. Martinsville now, Vietnam War veteran Raymond M. Clausen, born October 14th 1947 in New Orleans Louisiana, Marine, living in Ponchatoula and Vietnam War veteran James E. Livingston, Marine, born January 12th 1940 in Towns, Telfair County Georgia, now living in New Orleans Louisiana. The only female to receive the Medal Of Honor was contract doctor, Dr. Mary Walker. Dr. Mary Walker received the Medal Of Honor on January 16th 1866. The War Department started in 1916 reviewing the abuse of the rewarding the Medal Of Honor. Dr. Mary Walker`s Medal Of Honor was revoked. On June 11th 1977 President Jimmy Carter restored Dr. Mary Walker`s Medal Of Honor and gave it to Dr. Mary Walker`s niece, Ann Walker. The US Postal Service honored Civil War Dr. Mary Walker in 1982 by putting her picture on the twenty cent first class stamp. Congress passed a law making it a federal offense for anyone claiming to be awarded the Medal Of Honor, illegally wearing the Medal Of Honor or buying the Medal Of Honor without legal authorization. The Presidents of the United States, in the name of Congress, has awarded more than 3400 Medals of Honor to our bravest Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen since the decoration`s creation in 1861.
