Question Eight: What’s the deal with
‘heard hearted
covenants’? If two Christians agree to break a marriage covenant isn’t it binding?
Answer: No. A “hard hearted” covenant is
a marriage covenant under the old covenant that was allowed to be broken because the
participants had a hard heart (See Matthew 19:8). Jesus talks about Moses allowing for
divorce under the Old Covenant for precisely this reason. You - as a Christian -
do not have a hard heart, therefore the laws of Moses - at
least in these areas - DO NOT apply to you.
Also remember you are dealing with issues of law, not grace and you certainly do not
want to put yourself
“under the law” as a Christian. A Christian today who says that their getting a divorce
from their Christian spouse on the basis of the Laws of Moses really insult Jesus teaching
on the matter (i.e. forgiveness and restoration). They also fail to see Jesus as trying to
move His people from a lower law (judgment) to a “higher
LAW (mercy).”
Covenants between Christians are the most binding of all
man made covenants and they are specifically addressed in scripture (1 Corinthians
7:10,11).
They cannot be broken unless one party dies.
Christians who want to go back to those particular Laws of Moses should think about
converting to Judaism.
