Power Converters & Starter Testing
In today's modern auto electric shop, the Power Converter offers many advantages over the old traditional car and truck batteries as a source of DC power. To begin with, the test voltage is always the same as converters don't run down or go "dead". Also, there is no danger of fumes or explosion with the attendant spray of sulfuric acid. With a converter, an inadvertent short circuit will merely trip the circuit breaker. For safety reasons alone, a power converter is a good investment. When you add the convenience factor, the advantages beome clear.
But, what size and type of converter is needed? New Engineering makes a complete line of power converters. Their features and typical usage are given below.
Standard Power Converter - Converts 220 volts, single phase power into 12 volt (Model #C-12) or 12 & 24 volt (Model #C-24) DC power. These rugged all purpose power sources can provide up to 500 amps at 12 volts and 250 amps at 24 volts and are protected against shorts by a double pole circuit breaker. They are usually mounted under a work bench with cables providing DC power to several work locations. They can be used in conjunction with any starter load tester or with our Free Run Starter Testers.
Free Run Starter Tester - is not a power source but is used in conjunction with a power source. The FRS provides a convenient means of connecting any power source (battery or converter) to the starter motor being tested. This allows for convenient control and measuring of the power. Models (#FRS-12 or #FRS-24) come equipped with all input and output power cables, control solenoids and 0-250 amp DC meter. Separate controls for "solenoid" test cable and "battery" test cable allows proper test sequencing. Up to four FRS control heads can be used with one power converter. And, with the FRS-24, one bench can test 12 volt starters at the same time another bench is testing 24 volt starters.
Mini-Converter - These machines convert 115 volt AC power into 12 volts (Model #MC-12) or 12 & 24 volt (Model #MC-24) DC power. They are convenient and portable sources of DC power for testing solenoids and passenger car starters. They deliver up to 200 amps DC in the 12 volt range and up to 100 amps DC in the 24 volt range. These converters can be supplied with an ammeter (0-200 amps) and/or a voltmeter (0-30 volts) and are protected against shorts by a circuit breaker.
Whatever your choice, whatever your needs, you can be sure that your New Engineering Power Converter is built rugged to provide years of reliable service. Special designs quoted on request.
