The First Month During the first month, Babies should be able to: - Lift head briefly when on stomach on a flat surface. - Focus on a face In the first month, you should try to get your baby on a normal sleeping schedule. Your baby if bottle-fed should be eating about 4oz. Every 3-4 hours (breast fed babies may eat every 2-3 hours). At this time I would recommend adding 1tsp of oatmeal baby cereal to the nighttime bottle. This will thicken the bottle so that the baby will begin to sleep longer during the night. When you do this, remember that you have to widen one of the nipples in order for the milk to come out, but make sure you do not use this nipple with the plain formula. Many doctors do not recommend this, but it works wonders!

The Second Month During the second month, Babies should be able to: - Smile in response to your smile - Respond to a bell in some way, such as crying, startling The second month gets a little better. Your baby should be starting to respond now, be even able to lift their head a little bit when they are on their stomach. The baby’s vocals are also getting better. Your baby may even be cooing. The nights should be getting better; your baby should have developed a sleep pattern by now and maybe even sleeping 6 or more ours at a stretch.

The Third Month During the Third month, your baby should be able to: - Lift head up 45 degrees when on stomach. The third month is a lot better, your baby should be responding more to different types of stimuli, maybe even laughing. Try to keep your baby on their stomach for a little bit each day so that they get used to it. It helps a lot with teaching them how to crawl or roll over. Floor play mats are good to use at this age. Most floor gyms include objects hanging from above that babies can try to grab and play with. This helps them with their eye hand coordination. Feeding-During this month you can begin to introduce your baby to stage one fruits and vegetables. You should introduce your baby to one fruit or vegetable at a time, giving them the same it for at least 3-4 days in row. The purpose of this is to check for allergies that the baby might have. Keep an eye out for rashes and irritability. If the baby shows these signs make a list of all the foods that they can not eat. Once the baby has tried them all, you can start mixing them together.
