Newborns can not be bathed in water until their umbilical cord stump falls off. Until this happens, babies are to be bathes simply with a wet rag. A little bit of soap can be used, however make sure that the soap does not contain perfume. Soaps and lotions containing perfumes are not to be sued on babies until they are about a month old to prevent allergic reactions. Since babies are not very active, you do not need to bathe your baby on a daily basis. Bathing your baby on a daily basis may also cause dry skin.
Newborns only eat about 2 ˝ to 3ozs of formula every 3-4 hours (every two hours for breastfed babies). The older they get, the more they will eat. So don’t worry if your baby is only eating 2ozs a day, they just need time for their little tummies to grow.
Many newborn babies experience excessive gas. If you notice that this gas is bothering your baby, bend the baby’s knees up to their chest. These techniques help to relieve a lot of pressure from the gas pains. If the gas persists and your baby is becoming irritable and unable to sleep, your doctor will probably tell you to try Mylicon drops. These are gas relief drops that would be given to your baby with every feeding. They are not in any way harmful to your baby. If the gas drops do not work, your doctor will more than likely advise you to change the baby’s formula to a lactate free brand. Again, it is no big deal; your baby may not have developed a tolerance for lactate.
