NJ Girls HS Basketball

Welcome to NJ Girls High School Basketball! On this page I will try to keep up with some of the top players and teams in the State of New Jersey.

Listed below are some of the top players from the classes of 2004, 2005, and 2006 throughout the state. (if you have any comments, questions, or feel I've left someone out that deserves mentioning or know some more info on the players I have already listed, please E-mail me to let me know)

Next winter should bring some very entertaining basketball with many of this past seasons top teams returning most of their main players. Here are 7 teams sure to be atop the state rankings in the 2003-04 season and should be added to anyone's must see list.
  1. Willingboro--With the state's most dominant post player, Crystal Langhorne, returning for one more year the Chimeras will once again be a tough team to beat. Junior guard Lateisha Wade is another very impressive player who has her own array of moves to the basket as well as a dependable outside shot. Wade and sophomores Tammy Meyers and Nicole Trawick have no problem doing some scoring of their own if Langhorne is being double (or even triple) teamed. Meyers is good at playing off the wing and isn't afraid to get to the boards for rebounds. Together Willingboro plays a tenascious man D led by their most impressive defender in Trawick. Watch for Willingboro to finally get out and play some tougher out of state opponents next winter in order to be better prepared for the States (their much anticipated showdown with CTK of NY was snowed out this past year).
  2. Shabazz--This team is led by one of New Jersey's top point guards in Matee Ajavon. At 5'8 and a lightning quick first step make Ajavon a nightmare to guard. If an opposing defender is quick enough to keep up with her, she's capable of posting up or shooting over them. She also distributes the ball with great effeciency and is helped out by another talented junior in Shahida Williams, who is now getting even more comfortable further away from the basket, and frosh sensation Kellindra Zackery. When Williams missed more than half of her junior year, Zackery was called upon to step up and grow up rather fast and she responded with flying colors. Zackery is 5'11 but is a strong and formidable pressence in the paint as she proved by helping to somewhat contain Crystal Langhorne when the Bulldogs defeated Willingboro in last years Group III state championship game. Jania Sims is another promising freshman who can handle the ball and shoot and looks to have a bright career ahead of her. Look for this team to meet Willingboro in the same game next year in probably one of the best games the state has ever seen in the Group III State Title game.
  3. Marlboro--The Mustangs rely on a tight defense to get their high flying offense in motion. All five starters are quick, very athletic and capable of picking up steals in bunches. The wizardry of another top point guard, Sharnee Zoll, gets this team going. Zoll averaged about 7.5 assists a game and most as a result of the nearly 7 steals a game she averaged. Zoll and Brina Pollack (who is actually a point guard but is forced to play the 2 behind Zoll) are both able to run the team and are very effective off the dribble or from outside. Jenna Gatto, who is a tireless worker on the glass and defensive end, and Christie Kastner, who has a nice outside shot, are very good players in their own right who can do a bit of everything nicely making them the perfect compliments to Zoll, Pollack and Chakhia Cole. The 5'9 Cole plays much bigger than she actually is. Cole uses her incredible leaping ability, "superwoman" stength, great anticipation, and a lot of heart to out-play much bigger opponents on a daily basis. Ali McMahon, another junior at 5'10, adds some depth and some much needed size to the Mustangs frontcourt. This team relys on team play and when they're clicking, few teams can beat them. They've showed a great deal of maturity since entering HS with high expectations as the Shore's version of the "Fab Five" and this past season proved they were capable of playing a half court game as well as some tenascious defense. Most importantly, they proved they were able to win the big games by beating Christ the King of NYC (at the time the #1 ranked team in the COUNTRY by USA Today) and making it all the way to the Final of the Tournament of Champions before falling by 3 to Shabazz. Look for this team to improve on the little things and play the best competition around once again on way to their second consecutive Group IV State Championship and TOC Final appearance (most likely against Shabazz again or Willingboro) as well as their first Shore Conference Tournament Championship.
  4. Immaculate Heart Academy--This team was staggered by injuries last year and hopefully will be in better shape for the 03-04 season. Nikki Flores and Lenissa Lopez, both about 5'4, run an affective offense and look down low to sophomores Tahirah Williams and Vanessa Holden frequently. Both Flores and Lopez have dependable jump shots as well and are capable of scoring. Williams is improving rapidly and is now developing an outside component to compliment her already strong inside game. Junior Daryl Cioffi plays from the heart and is a true hustler on both ends of the floor. Up and coming freshman Frankie Mileone and 6'1 junior Corrine Albrecht are two more top contributers off the bench for this team. If this team stays healthy look for them to run the table in Parochial A and return back to the TOC after a one year absence.
  5. Absegami--This is yet another team of a long list of schools with all its top performers returning. Kara Ayers is capable of playing the point as well as the 2 guard and does both quite well. She and Basimah Thompson will most likely split time running the team and both are dependable from the outside or off the dribble. Junior Shantae Barnes and freshman Kristina Rosario give the braves size in the post and are quite capable of finishing themselves. Rosario should blossom into one of the top players in South Jersey by the end of her career. Having a few players capable of coming off the bench and contributing give Absegami another nice option. After bowing to Marlboro by 4 in last years Group IV Semi-Finals, look for this team to be hungry enough to get back to the same point and play another great game against the Mustangs.
  6. Scotch Plains--Led by a core of sophomores including the inside presence of 6'1 center Hillary Kilmowicz, the 3-point shooting of Maura Gillooly, and the point guard play of Jenny Burke Scotch Plains is still improving. It showed signs of brillance this past winter by beating a few good opponents including Shabazz (even though the Bulldogs played without star forward Shahida Williams). Junior Jenn Russell adds another rebounding presence inside and is effective off the wings. With all things in place, watch for Scotch Plains to be tops in Union County and win their first county chamionship. This team needs to find a way to beat archrival Shabazz (much easier said than done), which has given them more than half their total losses over the last two seasons, to add any other championships. In order to do this, Scotch Plains, like Willingboro and Absegami, needs to get out and play some of the better competiton within the Tri-State area.
  7. Morris Catholic--Junior Megan Olenowski runs an effective offense and is on top of this teams 1-3-1 defense. A team made up of mostly guards, Morris Catholic rely's on a crisp, smooth opperating offense and teamwork. Olenowski and classmate Allison Dunn and sophomores Katie Dunn and Claire Wilson all shoot very well and crash the boards good too. All four of these players are capable of putting up good numbers on the board on any given night making this team tough to defend, especially if they're all on. Morris Catholic usually fits a few tougher opponents on its schedule which will only make this team well prepared for the state tournament and most likely get them to the TOC after bowing to a strong Sacred Heart team in the Parochial B State Final this past year.
