A Dolphin Named Flipper

Flipper is a dolphin, an atlantic bottlenose dolphin and are mammals like people. Years ago many people used the term "porpoise" instead of "dolphin" but a dolphin and porpoise are two different kinds of toothed whales and flipper was actually a dolphin. Theres a lot more to the story of Flipper then what you saw in the 60's tv series and two movies. Though Flipper in the movies and television series was a male dolphin the role was actually played by several female dolphins through out the years. Those dolphins were Kathy, Susie, Patty, Scottie and Squirt. Ric O'Barry author of "Behind the Dolphin Smile" and "To Free a Dolphin" was once a trainer at Maimi Seaquarium and trained the dolphins for "Flipper". Ric O'Barry is now against animal captivity and has formed The Dolphin Project helping to free captive dolphins that he once helped capture.

Ric O'Barry with a captive dolphin whose real name is Flipper. O'Barry rehabilitated Flipper and returned him to the wild to be a free dolphin again.

The Flipper series aired in the 1960's with co-creator Ricou Browning and Jack Cowden. Ric O'Barry was the dolphin trainer for the series and two movies.
