Harry had tried everything to get the water out of her lungs when suddenly she sat up and crawled back over to the waters edge. She stared at her mother and asked, "How did you knwo that was going to happen? How do you know all this stuff?"
"Do you really think you get all of ur powers from Voldemort? There is a reason y he wanted you to be his servant and not me or ur father." She replied.
"Oh so i get that power from u. Wait, who's my father?" Kayt asked.
Her mother looked to the side and then back up to Kayt. "Let me tell you the story. When I had first figured out how to turn into a mermaid, I would usually just stay in the water. I had never loved and had never thought I would. But one unfortunate day, I was swimming along the shoreline when a boy about my age had seen me. He had just transfered to Hogwarts from the U.S. He had seen me pop up out of the wtaer and called me over. I swam over and looked at him. He had dark black hair and bright green eyes. You have his skin and hair color. Anyway, so I started to talk to him and i found out that he was in the same house as me. The next thing I knew was that he would come to see me more often and we were friends. We were outside one night while everyone was inside during a school dance. We didn't have dates. We jsut went together as friends. We both walked out towards the lake and he kissed me right where you are standing right now. We went out and it seemed we were perfect for each other. No one really kew about us and we were both in our last year of school. We had been going out for years and had a very good relationship. It had its ups and downs like any other one but it went pretty well. But then, one dreadful night I woke up in a cold sweat for some reason. At this point I was pregant with you. I had a preminition that your father was no longer in the school. I ran up to his dorm to find him but he wasn't there. That was the last I'd ever heard of him for a long time. I still don't know why he left but after that, things just started falling apart. I had you, which is one of the things that helped me back up, and then I met Voldemort. I made the deal with him and when I was talking to him, i saw your father. He was there and we both agreed with Voldemort just so you wouldn't be like us. After that he killed me and I'm not quite sure what happened to your father." Her mother wiped tears away from her eyes.
Kayt was silent as a tear feel down on the reflection of her mother. She muttered to hersel, "So my dad ran away for no aparent reason, you wanted a better life for me so you gave my life away, and then you died."
Her mother shook her head. "I'm so sorry."
"It's ok, it's not your falt."
"I have to go. Be careful of the lake." Her mother said as she faded away.
"Mom!! No!!" Kayt screamed as she put her hand in the ater as if she was going to grab her hand.
She rolled over on her back and just stared at the sky. She slowly got up with Harry's help and walked up to her dorm to get changed.
There was a long pause and Kayt said "Thanks."
Harry looked up at her. "No problem." There was another pause. "What did your mother say?"
Kayt wondered whether or not she should tell him yet. "Oh, well, just about my father and stuff like that."
They parted at the dorm doors and got changed. They both walked down the stairs silently and every now and then Kayt would see Harry look over from the corner of her eye.
They made it back outside and joined the class.
Harry sat back down next to Ron and Hermione, just looking longingly at Kayt.
Malfoy looked at her and put his hand out for her.
She looked over to Malfoy and then to Harry. She wasn't sure if Harry would talk to her again and if she wanted to even speak to Malfoy again. Ron and Hermione might also be mad at her and they may not welcome her.
She walked towards Malfoy and took his hand as she sat down.
She saw Harry just look down and play with the grass on the ground. He didn't look up. He couldn't look up. He sniffled slightly. He thought to himself 'How could she go back to him after I saved her from dieing. If I hadn't gone to save her then she would be dead. If I hadn't loved her then maybe this wouldn't be happening.'
Kayt watched Harry and thought to herself 'Why don't I go to him? I know i love him and i want to go to him. Why am i breaking his heart? Why do I stay with the guy who wouldn't risk his life to save me?'
She sighed and started to pay attention to Professor Trelawny.
Class was over and Kayt left after Malfoy saying that she needed to talk to Professor Trelawny. She knew Harry, Hermione, and Ron always left last so she waited for Harry to leave.
Just as she was about to walk into the school, she grabbed his arm.
Harry turned and looked at her. He shook her hand off his arm and kept walking away. This time he didn't look back.
