HOSTILITY AND VIOLENCE? 
 

People, who follow terrorist activities these days, are found all over the world. Terrorist activities are present in every nation. Terrorists are busy creating fear, looting and depriving the citizens of their rights. Terrorists terrorize in every way possible to achieve their goals. They also instigate locals and force them to adopt the path of violence. When failed in their pursuits they indulge in their bloody activities and create an atmosphere of terror as many Maldivians are now experiencing. You are bound to experience even more soon. These terrorist groups, or the hooked elements, prepare people to confront the opposition party or the government. In these days it is often seen in many, the governments terrorize the people in order to restore power or to stick to power and make the lives of people very difficult to survive.

Basically can there ever be a place for political violence in a democracy when it is based on the transfer of power through peaceful means, and to make leaders responsive to the aspiration of the people? Despite all this known, the very selfish interests of politicians do give birth to political violence in the society. This political violence arises in different forms due to rigging of the vote or for other reasons, like bribing, are generally seen in limited areas and not only during elections, but long before they could even start.

During elections a common behaviour seen among anti-social elements is threatening voters. We have seen in the past the capturing of the voting booths or denying an impartial vote to the weaker areas of the country by creating dreadful and fearful atmospheres. These elements are supposed to be assured of political protection but due to poverty, which has adversely affected democracies around the world especially in the growing democracies, they are not protected.

Some people think they sell their votes, due to fear, poverty, and/or illiteracy. Politicians take advantage of the ignorance although it cannot be bought. Vote cannot be bought for money. People who think they bought the vote do not have the foot in the context of truth and is not fit for public service. The fact is that although they dump in money for the buying, the duty of people who are elected have an oath to respect and the duty to compel them to work for the benefit of the people and not only for their personal lives. People who create political violence are normally seen among drug addicts, hooligans and scoundrels. People who understand this kind of terror do not have any respect for the political right of contesting or holding public offices. This is absurd and meaningless to them. They have no interest and real participation in the then administration's unfair vote. Maldivians (many have understood for many years) have repeated the same experience which is not healthy. These politicians give costly gifts from government funds or the temptation of employment of executive jobs to relatives, with little change in the general policies, which have failed for years.

Certain people who have become rich with help of the regime will give donations to political parties and have their foot in every corner, which is nothing less than open bribes. But they work above the law with the political protection given and resort to all sorts of immoral acts which corrupt the politicians and the overall politics of the country. A greater number of Maldivians now have the opportunity to travel. A few understand that a greater portion of developing countries still belong to the poor who fall under the poverty line and are under educated. Therefore many of the poor do not understand their rights as citizens and the duties provided to them by the state. This is done purposely by powered entities to suppress the people and the unknowing citizens remain satisfied with the search and acquisition of hardly two square meals for the day. They are kept unaware of the unsocial elements in the society who make the best use and take advantage of the situation. On the other hand the state fails to get the adequate and the right information or the data of the problem. With this absence, it is negligible to mitigate the problems and it gets aggravated.

For instance, if the government intends to take effective and concrete steps in a correct direction without populist consideration, it should take effective steps against hurdles coming in the form of religion, or a blind faith in a Islamic country. This blind faith could be dangerous and is important to face against the odds, especially when confronted by the developing countries with the population expanding. The demands will be more than the supply, when the recourses are continually increasing.

I personally believe that in a developing country like the Maldives, we cannot say it lacks resources when compared to what we have in its natural form. I cannot say that our country cannot afford to give nutritious foods and conditions important for a dignified existence, to each and every Maldivian in the country. It is important to demand a constitution that will exist to give essential provisions to all in order to narrow down the gap between these chosen entities. It is important that the government stops enabling the few by continually adopting lofty policies which allow resources owned by a minority, who may be politicians, industrialists or the higher state at the bureaucracy, to become even wealthier while the majority of citizens are deprived of even the minimum requirements of livelihood.
