Simplifying Radicals

Example 1

The Square Root of 121 = 11. (11 times 11=121)

Example 2

The Square Root of 120 = 10.95 or 2 Square Root 30. (10 times 12, 10 breaks down to 5 times 2, and 12 breaks down to 6 times 2. 6 then breaks down to 3 times 2).

Simplifying Radicals in the Denominator

Example 1

The square root of 2 times the square root of 8 = the square root of 16, which is 4.

Example 2

The square root of 4 over 3 can't be simplified.

You have to nationalize the denominator and then simplify, like so:

The square root of 4 over the square root of 3 times the square root of 3 over the square root of 3 = the square root of 2 over the square root of 3 times the square root of 3 over the square root of 3, which equals 2 square root 3 over the square root of 3, whcihc then cancels out to be just 2.
