GATE FOUR B

NOTE... THE PAGE IS LONG... MANY PICTURES... PLEASE LET THEM LOAD FIRST!!!

This portion of the bus terminal contains some other historical/relevant information about the Rutgers Campus Bus System, nearly 20, yes TWENTY years worth of data and information.  Wow. You won't find CURRENT CAMPUS BUS route information here, so please go to the appropriate page for that information.

What you'll find on this page specifically is the HISTORY of THE PAST of the Rutgers Bus Routes.  The routes I'm referring to are the AX, CA, D, E, G, GG and LXc.  All the other routes are over at Gate 4A.  It's a REALLY LONG PAGE, so please allow for the pictures to load first.

>>Pictures of the routes were previously taken from the Rutgers Parking and Transportation Services website, now Rutgers Department of Transportation Services.  They in turn had gotten them from the now defunct whereismybus.com site.  I did heavy photo editing to depict the routes as they were in the past...  Note that SOME of the pictures are NOT 100% accurate due to the accident omission of a few details (like a bus stop or 'local roads' for example) that I might fix in the future.
>>Information listed below is derived either from personal observation/analysis, from actual printed sources (such as Campus Maps), or from actual people.

NOTE:  This gate (page) is still/always being worked on!  The info is up, but there is still information that needs to be added/updated!  This means that the stuff below is about 85-99% accurate.

AX ROUTE HISTORY:
September 2000-May 2001

Stop Order (September-October 2000):  RSC, Scott Hall, SAC, Lot 48A, Stadium West Lot, Werblin, Hill Center, Science Buildings, ARC, Hill Center, Science Buildings, Stadium West Lot, Lot 48, RSC

Stop Order (October 2000-May 2001):  RSC, Scott Hall, SAC, Lot 48A, Stadium West Lot, Werblin, Hill Center, Science Buildings, Johnson Apts, Library Sci/Med, ARC, Hill Center, Science Buildings, Stadium West Lot, Lot 48, RSC

-The AX route replaced the A route for a year, in an attempt to fix the problems that plagued parking on College Ave.  The route attempted to create alternative possiblities for parking, but it didn't help much.  The first few days of the AX route were AWFUL, HORRENDOUS, AND PATHETIC!!!  I recall trying to get back to College Ave. on the first day of class for a fifth period class (2:50 PM to 4:10 PM).  I waited about half an hour to an hour at the ARC before an AX showed up.  The bad news... it wasn't just ONE AX that showed up... more like 3-5 of them.  Even worst... I was crammed on the first one... and I got to class (which I eventually dropped) with about 15 minutes LEFT in the period.  Even after several students concerns were made, the AX changes that were enacted in mid-October weren't enough to save it.  The route started out with 5-6 buses servicing the route (some articulated), eventually dropping the # down to 4 (again some articulated).   The AX scheduling changed as well, starting earlier (7 AM) than previously scheduled (8 AM).

It's important to note that while the AX route existed, the 'H' ran on the weekends instead of the 'A,' but it was still the same overall weekend route (College Ave./Busch/Livingston).  The bus destination boards were never updated to reflect this (and sometimes the A weekend route message was used, whilte the H (or A) plastic bus sign thing was sometimes used to reflect the College Ave./Busch/Livingston route on the weekend...).  When the AX and H were changed mid-October, the 'A' returned to weekend service, 'replacing the H,' but still sometimes the wrong message board was used...

For a while after this AX fiasco, some (that works for Suburban, Academy, Parking & Transportation services) people it seems can't seem to correctly identify what weekend bus runs from College Ave./Busch/Livingston.  Some would say that the H bus runs on the weekend or summer (as per select printed material), but then why not update/create the proper destination message to reflect this?  Some drivers that drive on the weekend used this display/message:

[H COLLEGE AVE] [H BUSCH ]

while others used this:

[A COLLEGE AVE] [A BUSCH/ ] [A LIVINGSTON]

Oh brother... make up your mind, you meant 'A' but you accidentially printed 'H'...  You see in 1999-2000, it was the A bus that ran on weekends (PLAIN AND SIMPLE), unlike today when the same bus could be the 'A' or 'H'... oh what a simplier time 99-00 was...

CA ROUTE HISTORY:
**Information about the CA Route derived from the 1997-1998 Rutgers Campus Map.

September 1997-May 1998

Stop Order:  RSC, Scott Hall, SAC, Stadium, Stadium West Lot, Stadium, RSC

-1997-1998 was an interesting year... it was the first time in nearly ten years that there were 11 Rutgers Campus Bus Routes.

-This route was designed to help ease the parking problems on College Ave, by quickly transporting students back and forth between College Ave and the Commuter Parking Lot by the Stadium.

-This route ran only from 9:30 AM until 8:00 PM, every 10 minutes.

-This route NEVER came back for 1998-1999... which 'forced' the A and the H buses to service the Stadium West Lot for the first time in their respective histories.

D ROUTE HISTORY:
September 1986-May 1991?

Stop Order:  Rutgers Student Center, Scott Hall, Train Station (1986-1987 term only), Harrison Ave, Cedar Lane Apts, Physical Plant, Quads, Towers, Livingston Student Center, Louis Brown Athletic Center (RAC), Physical Plant, Cedar Lane Apts, Harrison Ave, Train Station, Scott Hall, Rutgers Student Center

After servicing the Train Station, the D would make the left onto Somerset, then a right back onto College Avenue to service Scott Hall.  After that, the bus would continue to College Avenue in a northbound direction, then make a left turn on Morrell Street.  It did this to make a u-turn using Sicard and Senior Streets so that the D could start the trip/run over on College Avenue, back in the southbound direction.  Yes, Morrell Street was an open street at the time.

Parts of this D route would later resurface on the L route starting in Fall of 2003...

Yes, not too many routes run counterclockwise on Livingston.

E ROUTE HISTORY:
September 1986-May 1986
You can't have an "EE" without there being an "E" first...

Stop Order:  Rutgers Student Center, Scott Hall, Albany Street, Paterson Street, Livingston Ave, Carman Street, Cooper Dining Hall, Red Oak Lane, Lipman Hall, Corwin (after 5:00 PM), Biel Road, Henderson Apts, Katzenbach, Gibbons, College Hall, Abeel Street (not Carman)?, Livingston Ave, Paterson Street, Hamilton Street, Ledge

The map to the left is an approximation of what the main College Ave & Cook/Douglass was back in the day.  Actual road/stops might have varied.

The school years from 1986 up until 1994 was REALLY interesting.  You HAD so many ways to get to Douglass from College Ave (and vice-versa).  You had the choice of the E bus... the EE bus... or the F bus.

September 1987-May 1994

Stop Order:  RSC, Scott Hall, Train Station, Paterson Street, Livingston Ave, Carman St, Cooper Dining Hall, Red Oak Lane, Lipman Hall, Corwin (AFTER 5:00 PM), Lipman Hall, Biel Road, Henderson Apts, Katzenback, Gibbons, College Hall, Carman St, Livingston Ave, Paterson Street, Train Station, Ledge

The E never returned after May 1994.  The E Route's retirement subsquently made the EE and F became the TWO main routes between College Ave and Douglass.  This subsequently made the EE route the one for travel especially on those semester weekends and summer weekdays...

This would ALSO be the last time (until September 2006 with the change of the F Route) that there were TWO routes that went between College Avenue AND Cook/Douglass.

G ROUTE HISTORY:
September 1986 to May 1987

Cook/Douglass TO Livingston TO Busch TO Livingston

Stop Order:  Red Oak Lane, Lipman Hall, Biel Road, Henderson Apts, Katzenbach, Gibbons, College Hall, Harrison Ave, Cedar Lane Apts, Physical Plant, Quads, Towers, Livingston Student Center, Louis Brown Athletic Center (RAC), Health Center, BAMM, ASB, Hill Center, Science Buildings, Library of Science and Medicine, Taylor Road, Davidson Dining Hall, Busch Campus Center, ASB, BAMM, Health Center, Beck Hall, Livingston Student Center, Towers, Quads, Physical Plant, Cedar Lane Apts, Harrison Ave, Cooper Dining Hall, Red Oak Lane

>Yes, the G route back in 1986 was that long.  Not only does the route serve as the ONLY DIRECT way to get from Cook/Douglass to Livingston, but also serves as an alternate to the B bus.  The GG was only between Cook/Douglass and Busch.
>This was also the weekend G route for the 86-87 school year.

September 1987 to May 1990

Cook/Douglass TO Busch TO Livingston

Stop Order:  Red Oak Lane, Lipman Hall, Biel Rd,, Henderson, Katzenbach, Gibbons, College Hall, Hill Center, Science Buildings, Library of Science & Medicine, Taylor Road, Davidson Dining Hall, Busch Campus Center, Busch/Livingston Health Center, Beck Hall, LSC, Towers, Quads, Physical Plant, Cedar Lane Apts, Harrison Ave., Cooper Dining Hall

>The G route is simplified, only servicing Busch and Livingston (in that order) after going through Cook/Douglass.  The bad news was that there was NO DIRECT route from Cook/Douglass TO Livingston and NO DIRECT route from Busch TO Cook/Douglass.  People had to endure the (long) G route, until the revisions to the G and the revival of the GG were made in 1990.

>This was also the weekend G route for the 87-89 school years, and would later become the basis/part of the weekend G route from 2000-2005.

September 1990 to 1995

Cook/Douglass TO Busch

Stop Order:  Red Oak Lane, Lipman Hall, Food Science Building, Biel Rd, Henderson, Katzenbach, Gibbons, College Hall, Stadium (added to the route by 1992), Werblin Back (added to the route by 1992), Hill Center, Science Buildings, Library Sci/Med, Taylor Road, Davidson Dining Hall, Busch Campus Center, ASB (not covered from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM), BAMM (not covered from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM), Silvers Apts/Brett Road (not covered from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM), Buell Apts (alternate stop covered from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM), Werblin Front(added to the route by 1992),  Stadium (added to the route by 1992), Cooper Dining Hall, Red Oak Lane

>>This is the ancestor/early version of the G route that existed in the beginning of the 21st century.  In 1995, the G route would revert back servicing Livingston along the way.

>>At least by this point, there are now separate and direct routes between Cook/Douglass & Busch and Cook/Douglass & Livingston.  Unfortunately both the G and GG routes will change again in about five years...

1995 to May 1998

Cook/Douglass TO Busch TO Livingston

Stop Order:  Red Oak Lane, Lipman Hall, Food Science Building, Biel Rd, Henderson, Katzenbach, Gibbons, College Hall, Stadium, Werblin, Hill Center, Science Buildings, Library Sci/Med, Johnson Apts, Taylor Road, Davidson Dining Hall, BCC, Busch/Livingston Health Center, Beck Hall, LSC, Towers, Quads, Facilities, Cedar Lane Apts, Harrison Ave., Cooper Dining Hall

Although the good thing about the G back then was that it was an alternative way to get to Livingston from Busch.  The bad news was that the route was LONG... and that often time the buses would not run on time (meaning the drivers would skip on some runs).  This didn't sit well for a certain John Karakoglou (the Assistant Director of Campus Bus Operations/Transportation)... who would make some changes to the GG route in 1998...

September 1998 to May 2004

Cook/Douglass TO Busch

G: Douglass/ Cook/ Busch

Stop Order:  Red Oak Lane, Lipman Hall, Food Science Building, Biel Rd, Henderson, Katzenbach, Gibbons, College Hall, Stadium (later Lot 48A), Werblin Back, Hill Center, Science Buildings, Library Sci/Med, Johnson Apts, Taylor Road, Davidson Dining Hall, BCC, Buell, Werblin Front, Stadium (later Lot 48), Nielsen St., Carman St., Cooper Dining Hall

Ah, what a difference it can make when you FINALLY drop one campus off from the route... and change the roads it travels on.  It was MANY years in the making.

The G no longers use Commercial Ave... but the area near/at New St. to get on/off Route 18.

>>For a while in the past, the G would go to Busch via River Road from 7-9 AM due to potential traffic on 18.

>>Often in the past, the G would go to Douglass from Busch using the following 'short cuts' from 3-4 PM until 6-7 PM.  Shortcuts were made due to traffic, traffic, and MORE traffic.

1)  after servicing Buell Apts, it would make a left onto Brett Road, then make a right onto Metlars Lane... this bypassed the Werblin and Lot 48 stops.  They did this to avoid having to WAIT to make a right turn onto Metlars Lane from Sutphen Road.  This only worked until the drivers were told NOT to do it, Brett Road closed down due to Rt. 18 construction on 12/2002...
2)  after getting OFF Metlars Lane by whatever means, the G would make a left turn onto River Road... instead of proceeding on Route 18.  By making the left turn onto River Road, then the right onto Albany/Route 27, then the left onto Nielsen St., the G would act like the GG in a slight way.  This method would only work if there were was excessive traffic southbound on 18 (and/or traffic on the exit ramp off 18 to Burnett St), or there wasn't EXCESSIVE traffic on Albany which will slow down the left turn onto Nielsen.  It turned out to be much faster to take River Road and Albany St, then take a left onto Nielsen rather than getting stuck sticking it on Route 18. Again, this only worked until the drivers were told NOT to do it.

-Up until about 2002 or so, from 7 to 9 AM in the morning, the G bus had previously gone to Busch via River Road due to the amount of traffic on Route 18.

-STARTING IN FALL 2003:  THERE WERE  5 G BUSES ON THE ROUTE (BY NOON) MONDAYS THROUGH THURSDAYS TO BETTER FACILITATE TRAVEL BETWEEN THE DOUGLASS/COOK AND BUSCH CAMPUSES.  THIS WAS DUE IN PART TO THE ROUTE 18 CONSTRUCTION PROJECT AND TRAFFIC THAT BUILDS UP ON METLARS LANE BY THE EVENING RUSH.  THERE WAS, HOWEVER, NO CHANGE IN THE  LENGTH OF OPERATION FOR THE G BUS.  THEY WILL STILL RUN AS OFTEN AS ADVERTISED.  THE EXTRA BUS IS ADDED TO ENSURE THE ARRIVAL OF G BUSES EVERY 15 MINUTES.  THE TRAVEL BETWEEN BUSCH AND COOK/DOUGLASS IS LONG AND IS DIFFICULT WITH THE CURRENT CONDITIONS TO KEEP HAVE G BUSES ARRIVE AT KEY STOPS EVERY 15 MINUTES OR SO.

-WIth the new entrance to Busch opens sometime after August 16, 2004, the G route will be altered to reflect the changes.

-A G bus (#3260) caught on fire on March 20, 2000 on the way to Busch.  Funny thing though it happened on my birthday...

September 2004-May 2005

Cook/Douglass TO Busch

Stop Order:  Red Oak Lane, Lipman Hall, Food Science Building, Biel Rd, Henderson, Katzenbach, Gibbons, College Hall, Werblin Back, Hill Center, Science Buildings, Library Sci/Med, Johnson Apts, Taylor Road, Davidson Dining Hall, BCC, Buell, Werblin Front, Nielsen St., Carman St., Cooper Dining Hall

>>With the new entrance to Busch opened in time for Fall of 2004, the G route changed accordingly.  It dropped the Lot 48 and Lot 48 A stops, mostly to keep the G buses moving as quickly as possible.

>>With the eventual Route 18 expansion near Nielsen Street/Douglass, the G and GG routes will not return at the start of the Fall 2005 semester.  It is predicted that this expansion/construction will really slow down the G buses, to the point where normal and efficient service can not be provided.  The G route is one of the longest and most difficult routes to maintain, so at least Rutgers Transportation is trying to solve the problem before it gets worse...

**The G Route got resurrected (slightly) on September 19, 2005, as the "REXB"...

GG ROUTE HISTORY:
September 1986 to May 1987

Cook/Douglass TO Busch

Stop Order:  Red Oak Lane, Lipman Hall, Henderson Apts, Katzenbach, Gibbons, College Hall, Stadium, Hill Center, Science Buildings, Library of Science & Medicine, Taylor Road, Davidson Dining Hall, ASB, BAMM, Cooper Dining Hall, Red Oak Lane.

>>Yes, the GG was only between Cook/Douglass and Busch.  The G route during this year was different (and a mess), as it ran between Cook/Douglass to Livingston, to Busch, back to Livingston, then back to Cook/Douglass.

>>This GG route in 1986-1987 would later serve as the basis for the G route in later years (when it only served Cook/Douglass and Busch).

>>Route disappeared at the end of the 86-87 year, only to resurface some three years later...

September 1990 to 1995

Cook/Douglass TO Livingston

Stop Order:  Red Oak Lane, Lipman Hall, Biel Road, Henderson Apts, Katzenbach, Gibbons, College Hall, Harrison Ave, Cedar Lane Apts, Physical Plant, Beck, Livingston Student Center, Towers, Quads, Physical Plant, Cedar Lane Apts, Harrison Ave, Cooper Dining Hall, Red Oak Lane

>>The GG route returns after a three year absence.  There are now separate and direct routes between Cook/Douglass & Busch and Cook/Douglass & Livingston.  Unfortunately both the G and GG routes will change again in about five years...

>>Notice that the GG ran CLOCKWISE on Livingston.  It will never do this ever again.

1995 to May 1998

Cook/Douglass TO Livingston TO Busch

Stop Order:  Red Oak Lane, Lipman Hall, Food Science Building, Biel Rd, Henderson, Katzenbach, Gibbons, College Hall, Harrison Ave, Cedar Lane Apts, Facilities, Quads, Towers, LSC, Beck/RAC, BCC, Davidson, Taylor Road, Johnson Apts, Library Sci/Med, Science Buildings (the ARC didn't exist yet), Hill Center, Werblin, Stadium, Cooper Dining Hall

Although the good thing about the GG back then was that it was an alternative way to get to Busch from Livingston.

To get to Livingston, the GG would make a right turn onto Commercial Ave (after servicing the last stop on Douglass>College Hall), then get onto Albany St./ Route 27 by taking that exit ramp, then the right onto River Road...

To get to Douglass (after Busch was serviced), the GG would get onto Route 18 after getting onto Albany St/Route 27.  It would make a right turn onto Commercial Ave, then a left onto George...

Ah... to think that such a route existed back then... it amazes me... the GG route was a pain even back then...

September 1998 to May 2005

Cook/Douglass TO Livingston

GG: Douglass/ Cook/ Livingston

Stop Order:  Red Oak Lane, Lipman Hall, Food Science Building, Biel Rd, Henderson, Katzenbach, Gibbons, College Hall, Harrison Ave, Cedar Lane Apts (2 stops), Facilities, Quads, Towers, LSC, Lot 100, Beck/RAC, Facilities, Cedar Lane Apts (2 stops), Harrison Ave., Nielsen St., Carman St., Cooper Dining Hall

Ah, what a difference it can make when you FINALLY drop one campus off from the route... and change the roads it travels on.  It was several years in the making.

For a while (some of 98' & 99'), the GG would use a small portion of Route 18 to get to Albany Street (to bypass Nielsen Street)... by getting to 18 from New Street.  This only would work if the exit ramp getting onto Route 27 (to Highland Park) from Route 18 wasn't backed up (and it often did).  It no longer does this.

I>>With the eventual Route 18 expansion near Nielsen Street/Douglass, the G and GG routes will not return at the start of the Fall 2005 semester.  It is predicted that this expansion/construction could affect the GG buses, to the point where normal and efficient service can not be provided.  The GG route is one of the longest and most difficult routes to maintain, so at least Rutgers Transportation is trying to solve the problem before it gets worse...

L ROUTE HISTORY:
September 1986-May 1987

Stop Order:  Rutgers Student Center, Scott Hall, Ledge, Health Center, Beck Hall, Livingston Student Center, Towers, Quads, Health Center, Rutgers Student Center

Back then, the L was the express version of the other College Ave/Livingston route, which was the D.

Yes, this L route in 1986 resembles the LX route when it first started some 10 years later in 1996.

Coincidentally/weirdly enough, when the LX route got changed (in Spring 2007) some 10 years later from ITS START DATE(Fall 1996), the LX resembled the L in May of 1987.  That's HISTORY for you...

September 1987-May 1990

Stop Order:  Rutgers Student Center, Scott Hall, Ledge, Health Center, Beck Hall, Livingston Student Center, Towers, Quads, Physical Plant, Cedar Lane Apts, Rutgers Student Center.

Yes, this L route in 1987 (slightly) resembles the LX route when it changed in 2001.

Back then, the L was the express version of the other College Ave/Livingston route, which was the D.

September 1990-May 1991 or 1992

Stop Order:  Rutgers Student Center, Scott Hall, Ledge, Health Center, Beck Hall, Livingston Student Center, Towers, Quads, Physical Plant, Cedar Lane Apts, Train Station, Scott Hall, Rutgers Student Center

This was the year that the L became less express, and more like the (long) College Avenue/Livingston route that remained in place (with some changes in later years) for more than 10 years.

After servicing the Train Station, the L would make the left onto Somerset, then a right back onto College Avenue to service Scott Hall.  After that, the bus would continue to College Avenue in a northbound direction, then make a left turn on Morrell Street.  It did this to make a u-turn using Sicard and Senior Streets so that the L could start the trip/run over on College Avenue, back in the southbound direction.  Yes, Morrell Street was an open street at the time.

September 1992-May 1998

Stop Order: Rutgers Student Center, Scott Hall, the Ledge (later known as the Student Activities Center), Health Center, Beck Hall, Livingston Student Center, Towers, Quads, Physical Plant (later known as Facilities Maintenance), Cedar Lane Apts., Harrison Avenue (added by 1994), Train Station, Van Nest Hall/Old Queens, DISCHARGE STOP in front of Hardenbergh Hall/near the Ledge/SAC, Rutgers Student Center

-The Physical Plant bus stop is in the area of the Facilities and Maintance buildings/shops.  This was the name for it at the time.

-The place we know as the "Student Activities Center" today was known as the "Ledge" back in '93.

September 1998-May 2003

Stop Order:  RSC, Scott Hall, SAC, Health Center, Beck Hall, Lot 100, LSC, Towers, Quads, Facilities, Cedar Lane Apts. (2 stops), Harrison Ave., Train Station, George/Hamilton Sts., DISCHARGE STOP in front of Hardenbergh Hall

-The L changed for the start of 9/1998... and not to actually change again for about five years...

-How the L bus got back to the RSC WAS STILL interesting.  The L bus no longer drops off students at Old Queens/Van Nest... now it drops them off near the intersection of George and Hamilton Streets.  This change allowed the L bus to move a little more freely (instead of having to get caught up on some turns and some traffic).  Then the guessing game STILL EXISTED for students waiting at the SAC looking for a bus to get to Livingston.  L buses that approach the SAC are either the OUTBOUND L bus or the INBOUND L bus.  They won't know what bus it is until one of them actually stops at the SAC or keeps on going to Hardenbergh.

-Due to Route 18 construction, traffic on Metlars Lane can get backed up... and we're not talking about SOUTHBOUND traffic.  Things can get backed up NORTHBOUND (construction trucks/equipment going in/out of the areas...) slowing up traffic even as far as Route 18 North/River Road.  This hurts the L and the LX routes... as they have to travel a long portion of Metlars to get to Livingston... so something had to be done...

September 2003-October 2006

>>An experiment was (silently) carried out during the first few weeks of the Fall 2006 semester, which changed how the L ran after the Train Station stop on Somerset Street to the Harrison Ave (north) stop on River Road, mostly to not get bogged down by heavy traffic.  The result was a sucess, resulting a/n (again silent) permanent change to the route sometime during the middle of October.

LXc ROUTE HISTORY:
September 2010-May 2011

STOP ORDER::

Rutgers Student Center, Scott Hall, Somerset Street Train Station AFTER 9:30 PM (Instituted Mid Fall 2010), Beck Hall, Lot 100, Quads, Treetop Apartments.

 >>This route incidentally runs similar to the LX route from September 1999 to May 2001.

DESTINATION SIGN:  It alternated between "LXc LIVINGSTON" and "LXc COLLEGE AVE".  Yes, "LIVINGSTON" is the first campus displayed after changing the sign from something else (whereas the A, EE, F, H, L, and LX routes always displayed "COLLEGE AVE" first.)

The "C" in "LXc" was lower case, because it was still considered an "LX" bus (same path from College Avenue to Livingston), with the "C" standing for "Cedar Lane", the one stop it service making it different from a regular "LX" bus.

Rutgers knew that when it terminated the L route, it was by that point mid-to late August 2010, and most people had settled into the Cedar Lane/Treetop Apartments thinking/had plans to use the L route to get to class (or to get to work).  The L route had been used by some to get to class, but ALSO by non-Rutgers people to get to work.  Part of the problem was that the L route was still/consider underutlized, and the buses could be better put to use on other routes (like the REXB and REXL).  The LXc was created as an alternate/temporary solution (and the "Weekend 1"/"All Campuses" also adjusted to service Cedar Lane).  The LXc  route will only run for the Fall 2010/Spring 2011 semesters.  This route is to give time (in the amount of a whole school year) to people living in Highland Park time to adapt or figure out other arrangements as the Rutgers bus service is not coming back in that area.

Rutgers had no intentions/plans to restore and continue service into Highland Park beyond the end of Spring Semester 2011.

 >>Initially there was only 1 LXc bus.  This changed due to passenger complaints/higher than expected demand (and the 1  bus getting packed/full at times; not being able to get everyone on board)~having to leave people behind at bus stops).

Current solution 1:  Make the LXc bus into an articulated bus, increasing passenger capacity. It was articulated most of them.

Previous temp solution 2 that had been enacted:  When the LXc bus got full from Livingston (it still got that full despite the
increased capacity; and people still complained about not being able to catch the bus due to it being too full, or the 30
minute wait got unbearable), the next regular LX bus was sent to follow the LXc bus and pick up people that the LXc
couldn't get (without much warning to those already on board the LX, resulting in a slightly longer ride to College Ave from
Livingston).  Although technically both the LX and LXc have the same amount of time to get from both College Ave to
Livingston (17 minutes) and from Livingston to College Avenue (13 minutes), the LXc path from Livingston to College Ave is
 longer than the LX.

Previous temp solution 3:  One of the LX buses turns into an LXc bus, between 9:15 AM to 5:00 PM (decreasing the wait
for the LXc from 30 to about 15 minutes).  After 5 PM, this bus turned back into a regular LX bus.  Subsquently, people
(still) complained about the wait... as it went back from 15 to about 30 after 5 PM.

Current solution 4:  One of the LX buses turns into an LXc bus, starting at 9:15 AM.  This remains the second LXc bus until
the bus (afternoon/evening driver's shift) ends at around 10:20 PM.

RU HOTEL SHUTTLE ROUTE HISTORY: Destination sign display starting in Fall 2009...
September 2008-December 2008

Stop Order:  Crowne Plaza Hotel-Somerset NJ, and Rutgers Student Center.

This route was created to shuttle people between College Ave campus and the hotel where housing opted to house some students at.  Fall 2008 was the first time Rutgers used an outside hotel for housing needs.

The route debuted with only 1 bus, but complaints about the long wait (departing every 40 minutes from either end) prompted an extra bus being added around the middle of October 2008.

**If traffic in the area of Landing Lane was bad, the hotel bus would use Huntington Street to return to College Ave instead.

The shuttle was identified by the destination signs reading "RUTGERS UNIVERSITY" (they were never programmed accordingly) and paper signs taped on the front window that said "RU HOTEL SHUTTLE".

The shuttle was never viewable on the Nextbus system as it was assumed the route wouldn't have lasted beyond HALF a semester (in other words, Housing should have gotten found space ON CAMPUS for everyone in the hotel by then).  It would have costed more to get the route 'programmed' into the system and then some.  Also, it was easier figuring when the bus left (every 20/40 minutes) from either College Ave or the hotel (assuming normal traffic conditions) than most of the other routes (A, B, EE, F, etc.)

Time history:

September 08-mid October 08 weekdays/weekends:
From Hotel:  Start:  7 AM, every 40 minutes, last bus left at 2:20 AM.
From CAC:  Start 7:20 AM, every 40 minutes, last bus left at 2:40 AM.

mid October 08-December 08 weekdays:
From Hotel:  Start 7 AM, every 20 minutes until 7:00 PM; every 40 minutes thereafter; last bus STILL left at 2:20 AM.
From CAC:  Start 7:20 AM, every 20 minutes until 6:40 PM   (FYI:  the second shuttle ENDED at College Ave at 7 PM); every 40 minutes thereafter; last bus STILL left at 2:40 AM.

mid October 08-December 08 weekends:
From Hotel:  Start:  7 AM, every 40 minutes, last bus left at 2:20 AM.
From CAC:  Start 7:20 AM, every 40 minutes, last bus left at 2:40 AM.

September 2009-May 2010

Stop Order:  Crowne Plaza Hotel-Somerset NJ, and Student Activities Center {College Ave Campus}

The hotel route comes back just for one more year...

Depending on when/what bus was used, the bus  now displays "HOTEL SHUTTLE" on the destination signs (which was only applicable if a regular Rutgers bus was used-of the NOVA or the LOW FLOORED NOVA variety, or an ACADEMY MCI CHARTER BUS).  Often times, a white mini shuttle (either # 3004 or #3005) was used as one of the hotel shuttles as well.

This route returns to shuttle people between College Ave campus and the hotel where housing opted to house some students at.  It will NOT return for Fall 2010 (as of May 2010).

The route debuted with 2 buses, but complaints about the long wait after 7 PM weeknights Monday thru Friday (departing every 40 minutes from either end) prompted the second bus' hours of service being extended not too long after.

**If traffic in the area of Landing Lane was bad, the hotel bus would use Huntington Street to return to College Ave instead.

Again like before, it was never viewable in Nextbus.

The route never returned for Fall 2010 as the University managed to get everyone on campus that wanted to live on campus.  Plus new dorms would start to have been built on both Busch and Livingston... eliminating the immediate future need to house students off campus like this.

Time history:

weekends:

From Hotel:  Start:  8 AM, every 40 minutes, last bus left at 2:40 AM.
From CAC:  Start 8:20 AM, every 40 minutes, last bus left at 2:20 AM.

certain holiday/break periods:
From Hotel:  Start:  8 AM, every 40 minutes, last bus left at 2:00 AM.
From CAC:  Start 8:20 AM, every 40 minutes, last bus left at 2:40 AM (that bus arrived to CAC at 2:20 AM after leaving from the hotel at 2:00 AM, but was held until 2:40 AM as a convinence).

weekdays:

INTIALLY:
From Hotel:  Start 7 AM, every 20 minutes until 7:00 PM; every 40 minutes thereafter; last bus STILL left at 2:20 AM.
From CAC:  Start 7:20 AM, every 20 minutes until 6:40 PM   (FYI:  the second shuttle ENDED at College Ave at 7 PM); every 40 minutes thereafter; last bus STILL left at 2:40 AM.
CHANGED TO (happened not too long after Fall 2009 had started:
From Hotel:  Start 7 AM, every 20 minutes until 3:00 AM;
From CAC:  7 AM, every 20 minutes until 3:00 AM;
