Instructions
Before You Build:
- Record everything you do in journal!
- Get a copy of the materials list from your teacher.
- Collect items from home.
- Brainstorm - record design ideas and sketches in your project journal.
- Think about different ways your simple machines will connect to one another.
- How will your device accomplish this challenge?
Assemble your machine on a foundation that will allow you to move it from place to place. Heavy cardboard and old boxes make great foundations.- Click Here - to view examples of fantastic contraptions
Build:
- Build a device that will move a ping pong ball
- a minimum of 1 meter horizontally
- 30 centimeters vertically
- must END up in an 8 ounce cup
Describe:
- Write a paragraph describing the device and how it works.
- Write clearly
- Paint a picture with words
Share:
- Share written descriptions with class
- Correctly match written descriptions with devices
Exchange:
- Select one device and send description to Partner School
- Reproduce Partner School's device

When Working in Groups:
- Each member can design a simple machine.
- What types of simple machines will you use?
- Keep in mind, only 3 simple machines can be used to build device.
- How will these machines work together?
- Designs may change throughout this challenge.
- Try out several different combinations of machines.
Choose designs that best meet the challenge.
