PULLEY:  A pulley is a grooved wheel that has a rope, belt or cable attached and can be used  to move things up, down, or across.

 
Objectives:  Student will be able to: identify a pulley as a wheel that turns on a rope, make a pulley and explore how it can be used to make work easier by lifting things.

Materials:


 
Questions:  What do you call a wheel that turns on a rope and lifts heavy weights?  How does it work?

Procedure:


Journal:

Conclusion:  When you combine a wheel, (in this case a spool), with a rope ( the ribbon) you have a pulley.  A pulley can change the direction of the force exerted by your muscles.  Instead of lifting a heavy object straight up, you pull down on an attached rope.
