Activity Two: Data Analysis
Overview
In this lesson students will create line graphs comparing pollen count
to rain, wind speed, and temperature. They will use these graphs
to draw conclusions about their hypothesis on what affects the pollen count.
**Note to Teacher: Sample Graphs
are double-line graphs comparing pollen count to rain, wind
speed and temperature. The data does illustrate the relationships
that exist. You may use them before the activity if you wish.
Objectives
-
Learner will develop the ability to construct line graphs and overlay them
to form double line graphs. They will compare pollen count/rainfall, pollen
count/wind speed, and pollen count/temperature.
-
Learner will develop the ability to use these graphs to draw conclusions
about his hypothesis.
Materials
-
Data collection sheet
-
Graph paper or use of Excel software
-
Tracing paper
-
Straight edge or ruler
-
Journal
Procedure
1. Complete data collection sheet for a designated period of time.
This number of days will be labeled on the x-axis as days
in all four graphs.
2. Determine the range of the data for each, pollen count, rainfall,
wind speed, and temperature, by subtracting the smallest data number from
the largest data number. Use this to determine an appropriate scale
for the y-axis on each graph.
3. For graph #1, on graph paper, draw a large coordinate axes.
Title the graph, Change in Pollen Counts. Label the y-axis
pollen count(grains per cubic meter). Plot points for all
data entries. Connect all plotted points with line segments to form
a line graph.
4. For graph #2, on tracing paper over graph paper, draw a large coordinate
axes. Title the graph, Change in Rainfall. Label the
y-axis amount of rainfall(inches). Plot points for all data
entries. Connect all plotted points with line segments to form a
line graph.
5. For graph #3, on tracing paper over graph paper, draw a large coordinate
axes. Title the graph, Change in Wind Speed. Label the
y-axis wind speed(mph). Plot points for all data entries.
Connect all plotted points with line segments to form a line graph.
6. For graph #4, on tracing paper over graph paper, draw a large coordinate
axes. Title the graph, Change in Temperature. Label
the y-axis temperature(degrees, Fahrenheit). Plot points
for all data entries. Connect all plotted points with line segments
to form a line graph.
7. To examine the relationship between pollen count and rain, wind
speed, and temperature, overlay the tracing paper graphs individually over
graph #1 and describe what you see. What happens to the pollen count
as the precipition increases? Is pollen count affected by wind speed?
Does the temperature appear to affect pollen count? Explain the relationships
you observe. Use this information to draw conclusions about your hypothesis.
Explain your reasoning in your journal.
