Vegeta is the son of the former king of the saiyans. His father was killed on board Freeza's ship minutes before Freeza blew up the sayian homeworld. The whole race of the Saiyans were planet pirates, anyone that had the means to pay them could hire them, and they would conqure whole planets and sell them to the highest bidder. The whole race was under the power of Freeza, but they were getting too strong and rebelled. Freeza killed all but a handful, which were those that were not on the planet at the time. And he owned little Prince Vegeta. It was during the rescue mission for the little prince that King Vegeta was killed. Vegeta had worked for Freeza since then, until he went to Earth. He got his butt kicked and later helped Goku, Gohan, and the rest defeat Freeza and his gang. (He died, and got wished back) from then on he has been (more or less) a good guy.

This is Trunks. There are two versions of him. One comes back from the future to save everyone in the past so that it will save everyone in HIS timeline cause they all died.. But really he ends up making an alternate timeline in which another version of Trunks (Whom we call Chibi, or GT Trunks) got to grow up with his father and live a (not really) death free life.
