Samuel Robert Jones, Jr. Class of
1973
OBITUARY Samuel Jones, Jr., BBHS Football Star
SOMERVILLE -- The Rev. Mrs. Harley David will officiate at 1
p.m. services at the First Baptist Church of South Bound Brook today for
Samuel R. Jones Jr., 23, of 29 Fairview Ave. who died early Monday at St.
Peter's Medical Center in New Brunswick. Interment will be in Franklin
Memorial Park, North Brunswick.
Dr. Anthony Donatelli, who had been treating Mr. Jones for systemic
lupus erythematosus, said that the cause of death was still being
investigated at press time.
Born in Somerville, he spent his childhood years in South Bound Brook
and attended public schools there. He was a graduate of Bound Brook High
School, leading the Crusader football team to consecutive undefeated
seasons as a halfback in his junior and senior year. He was named to
several all-state teams, leading Somerset County in scoring in 1971. He
amassed over 3,000 yards in three varsity campaigns, and was cited as one
of 100 best schoolboy backs in the country by Popular Sports magazine in
1972.
Mr. Jones belonged to the "Double B" Club at the high school, and was a
member of the basketball team. He attended the University of Massachusetts
and made the varsity football team as a freshman. He was forced to leave
school due to illness, and was employed at John Wiley and Sons of
Somerset.
He contracted systemic lupus erythematosus, a disease of the body's
connective tissue, in 1973. Dr. Donatelli said that the disease may
involve the blood, skin, kidneys and heart, and is incurable but
controllable through treatment. He added that Mr. Jones had been taking
dialysis treatments at Muhlenberg Hospital three times a week after the
disease affected his kidneys.
Mr. Jones was visiting his fiancee in Piscataway when he was stricken
with chest pains. He was taken to St. Peter's Medical Center by the
Piscataway Rescue Squad, and was pronounced dead on arrival.
He is survived by his parents, Elouise and Samuel R. Jones, Sr.; a
sister, Claudia, and a brother, Terry, at home; a paternal grandfather,
Heard Thompson of Lanark, West Va.; his maternal grandparents, Claude and
Edith Miller of Somerville; 12 aunts and six uncles.
