My Favorite Player

Some people like the guys
who play on the first line or the second
The speedsters, awesome puck-handlers
The one's who score a hundred points or more
in a single season

There are some who are drawn to defensemen
They like the big, solid guys who break up plays
keep the puck out of their zone
and feed it to their forwards - maybe take it up ice
and shoot from the blue line

Others like those big name, marquee players
Doesn't matter what position
Just as long as he's talked about
written about
Has hats and t-shirts with his name on them

My favorite player is a fourth line left winger
A checker
An enforcer
He doesn't score fifty goals a season
Or even twenty - nor is he meant to

My favorite player takes his shift
and does everything he can
to make sure his opponents don't have the puck
And when he's on the ice
he never stands still

He is my favorite player because
he works hard and gives one hundred per cent
All the time, without fail
A true team player
with a 1995 Stanley Cup ring to prove it.

1997, L.M.D.
