The OBERFELDT Family

"The Overfields...are a numerous and well-known family in Germany, where there are large historic towns of the same name. The first written mention of the family in America is in the book, "The Great Indian Walk and Life of Edward Marshall," by his descendant, William J. Buck, in regard to Marshall's walking a vast tract of land from the Indians in Eastern Pennsylvania in 1737. He married Elizabeth Overfield about 1734; her parents were located on the east bank of the Delaware River, in New Jersey, above Easton, Pennsylvania, in the famous Minisink regions. The name of Elizabeth's father is not known, but he was born near Stuttgart, Germany, and emigrated to America in 1722"1
First Generation
A ??? OBERFELDT was born near Stuttgart, Germany and emigrated to America in 1722. He and his family settled on the east bank of the Delaware in NJ. They had at least a son and daughter, Paul (A1) and Elizabeth* (A2).1
Second Generation
A1 Paul OVERFIELD b. 1715 near North Germany, and came with his parents to New Jersey when he was seven years old. He at the age of eighty five in 1800 at Middle Smithfield, Monroe Co., PA. He m. Rebecca MARSHALL (see MARSHALL A4). Their children are: Benjamin (A11), Abner (A12), Sarah (A13), Mary (A14), Rachel (A15), Paul Jr. (A16), William (A17), Martin (A18).1
A2 Elizabeth OVERFIELD* d. May 1757 at the hands of Native Americans. About 1734 she m. Edward MARSHALL* (see MARSHALL A1).1
Third Generation
A11 Benjamin OVERFIELD b. 1751 in Middle Smithfield, Monroe Co., PA and he d. 27 Oct 1813 in Braintrim, Luzerne (now Wyoming) Co., PA.
"He enlisted in the Continental Army in 1776 and was in the battles of Trenton and Princeton, NJ. He also fought at Chadd's Ford and Germantown, PA. He and his borthers Abner and Martin were in the forces when General Sullivan was dispatched by General Washington in the summer of 1779 to raid the Indians in Genesee Valley, NY. His brother-in-law, Moses Van Campen, was quartermaster. During this excursion from Easton, PA, Benjamin located his homestead in the fastnesses of the wildreness along the Susquehanna river at Brick Chapel, as it is now known. He and his brothers Abner and Martin were in the Fifth Battalion of Northampton Co., and were honorably discharged in 1781. He removed his family to the new home in the spring of 1794. He married first ??? Gonzales, a descendant of Spanish nobility. "

Benjamin married second Margaret HENSHAW. They had Paul (A117), and Sarah (A118).

A18 Martin OVERFIELD b. 1756 and m. Sarah OTT was was b. 24 Nov. 1749 and d. 29 Feb 1848. Martin was in the Revolutionary War 1780-2 in the Fifth Company, Fifth Battalion of the militia of Northampton County, PA. He settled in the backwoods of Monroe Co., PA, and "commenced to clear up the primeval forest which shaded the Indian war path extending from the banks of the Delaware to the Susquehanna." He died on 25 May 1821 on his farm in Middle Smithfield Twp. His tombstone reads, "A soldier of the Revolution under General Washington." They had a son William and a daughter Sarah.2

A117 Paul OVERFIELD b. 22 May 1792. On 18 Jun 1812 he m. Lydia LACEY, daughter of Isaac LACEY from Connecticut. Lydia and Paul had the following children: William (A1171), Susannah (A1172), Harriet (A1173), Sarah E. (A1174), Benjamin (A1175), Margaret (A1176), Anna (A1177), John (A1178), Eliza Rebecca (A1179), Nancy Maria (A1170), Lydia Martha (A117a), and an unnamed infant.1

Fifth Generation
A1171 William OVERFIELD b. 10 Oct 1813 and d. 6 Mar 1898. He was a farmer and expert fruit grower; also a pioneer in Susquehanna County. He m. Anna BUNNELL on 22 Feb 1836. She was the daughter of John and Mary (PLACE) BUNNELL. She died 11 Mar 1854. On 17 Nov 1854 he m. Minerva H. REENEY, who d. 20 Jan 1884. 1

A1174 Sarah E. OVERFIELD b. 28 Feb 1820 and d. 21 Jun 1902. She m. Rev. Henry BROWNSCOMBE on 21 Aug 1843 and they had four children.1
A1175 Benjamin OVERFIELD b. 28 Mar 1822 and d. 5 Mar 1904. He m. Lois Ann CAMP on 2 Mar 1847 and they had nine children, all of whom married.1
A1176 Margaret OVERFIELD b. 16 Apr 1824 and d. 13 Dec 1875. She m. John C. STURDEVANT on 27 Sep 1848 and they had two sons.1
A1177 Anna OVERFIELD b. 20 May 1826. She m. John C. BERTHOLF on 30 Nov 1863 and they had one child.1
A1178 John Lacey OVERFIELD b. 16 Jul 1828 and d. 19 Nov 1889. He was educated at Wyoming Seminary and Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut, class of 1856. He entered the law firm of Scudder and Carter of Greater NY and after four years practised law as a profession in NY and Brooklyn. He m. Augusta DEAN and also Olivia BINNS. Augusta and John had a son, Alam (A11781). Olivia and John had Leonidas (A11782), Louise (A11783), Mortimer (A11784) and Chauncey Percy (A11785).1
A1179 Eliza Rebecca OVERFIELD b. 3 Sep 1830. She m. Edmund C. BUNNELL on 6 Feb 1851 and they had seven children, all of whom married.1
A1170 Nancy Maria OVERFIELD b. 24 Sep 1832 and d. 13 May 1876. She m. George W. SMITH who was in the Civil War1

Sixth Generation
A11711 Mary Harriet OVERFIELD, the family historian, b. 26 Mar 1837. She graduated from Wyoming Seminary in 1859 and m. first John M. FRANCE on 26 Mar 1861. They had a daughter Lydia M. (A117111). Mary m. second W. Henry RICE of Solebury, Bucks Co. on 23 Nov 1887 and he died 22 Feb 1909.1

A11714 Paul James OVERFIELD b. 6 Feb 1842 and d. 2 Nov 1882. He served three years in the Civil War from 186201865. He m. Sarah ROE on 30 Dec. 1872. They had seven children including Peter D. (A117141).1
A11715 John Bunnel OVERFIELD b. 14 Jan 1844 and served in the Civial War. He was the treasurer of Wyoming Co. one term and m. Julia JOHNSON on 24 Jan 1866. They had four children. Julia died in Pasadena, California where John lived with his second wife, Josephine NYE, whom he married 1 Jan 1908.1
A11716 Ettaline A. OVERFIELD b. 28 Mar 1848 and m. Henry Low LOTT 11 Jan 1865. They had four children.1
A11717 Charles Nezbert OVERFIELD b. 5 May 1850 and m. Amanda ACE 1 Jan. 1879. They had six children. Charles was "helpless with paralysis for a number of years and is now deceased." 1
