Interest in the fraternity was sparked by Louis Hagen, a transfer student from Glassboro, and Professor Naazir Conyers, the head of the African American Studies Department. An interest group was assembled in the Spring of 1988. This group consisted of Marvin Towler, Chris Teal, Nicholas Warner, and the nine founders. Throughout the Spring of 1988 there were several smokers to discuss what was needed for these young men to bring Alpha Phi Alpha to the campus of then Monmouth College. Later that year Chris Teal leaves college, Nick Warner loses interest, and Marvin Towler transfers to another school. The interest group now becomes Maurice Bell plus the nine founders.
In the Fall of 1989 George Wilson, the Dean of Intake for Zeta Epsilon Lambda Chapter, gives the green light for a Sping 1990 line. During that time there was a moratorium. All pledge activities in the Eastern Region were put to a halt. In the Summer of 1990 at the 84th General Convention a new intake program was adopted for the entire Fraternity. Once again they were given the green light, in thr Fall of 1990, for a Spring 1991 line.
During the Spring of 1991, March 2, 1991, the Nine Notorious Gems were initiated into ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY INC.
This was a glorius day as the first traditionally black fraternity came to the campus of Monmouth College. It has since then been an avenue of greatness for many men on this traditionally white campus now known as Monmouth University.
