LEBRON JAMES

JANUARY 24, 2003

We're going to go see Lebron James. The number one HS basketball player in the land and his number one HS basketball team from Ohio are going to be playing in Trenton the second weekend in February. Zack's coming up from Williamsburg...Adam's coming down from Easton...Kyleigh is coming from Glassboro...and little brother and a friend are coming with me. Z, K, and I are seeing our local team play Friday. All of us are going Saturday to see Lebron.

Lighthouses you say? Well, I'm driving Z back to school Sunday and I'll be driving back to NJ Monday. There were two lights in Delaware I needed to see....MARCUS HOOK and LISTON REAR RANGE. What better opportunity! A friend reccomended a sight, LIGHTHOUSE FRIENDS. There was more information than I anticipated. There are 8 lighthouses in this narrow, long state. There is also a lighthship. I can do this all in one day.

JANUARY 29, 2003

I spent part of the day at AAA getting maps and info on Delaware. I spent part of the day on line, between MAPQUEST, GOOGLE, and THE LIGHTHOUSE FRIENDS, putting together an intenary. Three of the lights I have seen...FENWICK ISLAND...HARBOR OF REFUGE...DELAWARE BREAKWATER. One light, MISPILLION RIVER, no longer stands. The rest will be an adventure.

FEBRUARY 1, 2003

NO LEBRON JAMES? Yesterday it was reported Mr. James lost his eligiblity by accepting retro jerseys in return for posing for pictures. He chose unwisely. The basketball showcase is still a go for us. My trip is still on...but unless an appeal is won, there will be no Lebron James for us...

But...my book is done, pages and directions for each. If there were more time I would revisit CAPE HENRY and ASSATEAGUE, two ocean towers I love so much. Not this trip....

FEBRUARY 8, 2003

YES LEBRON JAMES! The courts ruled him eligible. Tonight at 730 or so Z, K, Adam, younger brother and friend will be in the arena to watch him play. We saw him last year at the same event. Should be a good time.

AND, of course, while Z's return trip is still on, there is another snowstorm...we got 6 inches yeasterday...forecast for the over night. Should be a revisit of the Michigan scenario, at least for part of the day Monday...

FEBRUARY 9, 2003

He dropped 52 against USA TODAY's #7 team in the country. People stood during his warmups. Most endearing moment was shortly after second half began. After scoring 31 in first half, he stole two passes in a row, dribbled the length of the court, and slammed each home for the basket. As the other team called time, he ran back to his bench. One of the floor boys, maybe 7 or 8 years old, dropped his mop and ran towards him, leaping into his arms.

Lighthouses? Well, my book is packed and my camera is staged but it doesn't look good. A cold rain is to be in Williamsburg in the AM and I would be following the storm up the coast as it changes to snow. If I were far from home, say Michigan, I would endure this. Tomorrow I will most likely not.

FEBRUARY 10, 2003

NOT it is! Z loves the wintry mix, that squiggly purple line that the WEATHER CHANNEL uses to denote the changeover area from rain to snow. That line was dead over Williamsburg as I woke, the snow line dominating the rest of my potential viewing area. I was so sure today would be a no go I ddin't request a wakeup call.

  • FENWICK ISLAND
  • LIGHTSHIP OVERFALLS
  • HARBOR OF REFUGE
  • DELAWARE BREAKWATER
  • REEDY ISLAND REAR RANGE
  • LISTON REAR RANGE
  • MARCUS HOOK REAR RANGE
MISPILLION RIVER was also included on the list, though it would only get mentioned, having been finally destroyed by lightning and fire last year.

Whatever...there will be other trips south to accomplish this task. Worse case, it is an extended day trip from NJ. Next on the agenda will be whatever lights I can see while in Charleston (SC) for Adam's spring baseball trip mid-march. I start that that research next week.
