Lesson I

Unit One

B.
  1. Maria et Lucia.
    Mary and Lucy.
(Could be either Nominative or Ablative; the exact meaning would be derived from the context.)

  2. Ad Mariam.
    To Mary.
    Towards Mary.
    Near (to) Mary.

  3. In terra.
    In the land.
    On the earth.

(Remember that the articles "a/an" and "the" do not exist in Latin; so in terra could mean "on the earth" or "on earth," and so on.)

  4. Ex tuba.
    From the trumpet.
    Out of the trumpet.

  5. Terra Mariae.
    The land of Mary.
    Mary's land.

  6. In via.
    On the way.
    In the street.
    In the journey.

  7. Vita animae.
    The life of the soul.

  8. Ab lucia.
    From Lucy.
    Down from Lucy.

    (Thus, figuratively...)

    Towards life.

  10. Cum tubis.

  11. Terrarum bonarum.
    Of the good lands.
    (Thus, figuratively, for example:)
    Of the arable lands.
    Of the bountiful lands.

(...etc., depending upon the context. The word bonus is generic and may take a variety of nuanced meanings -- nearly all of which may be easily derived from the context.)

  12. Vitae.
    Of life. (Gen. Sing.)
    For life (Dat. Sing.)
    Lives. (Nom. Pl.)

  13. In anima.

  14. Ad vias.
    To the roads.
    At the roads.
    Near the streets.

  15. A terris.
    From the lands.
(Remember a = ab. The former preposition is used before a word beginning with a consonant.)

  16. In aquam.
    Into the water.
(N.B.: not "in the water." The preposition in + accusative denotes movement towards something.)

  17. Ad Luciam.

  18. Ad terram Mariae.
    At the land of Mary.
    To Mary's land.
