The House "Before"

April 2002

One last look at the house before all hell breaks loose.

Starting on the right...

5/16/2002 8:52:26 AM

First exposure reveals a bit of water damage, but also a surprise.

Starting on the right...
Who knew?
Who knew?

5/16/2002 10:03:20 AM

Looks like shadows from small corbels at the roof line, then fishscale, then square shingles, then what looks like a gap from the original porch roof, then "normal" clapboards. Looks like the old girl has some "foof" in her after all!

First wall is done!

5/16/2002 11:58:14 AM

More interesting than I guessed it would be, that's for sure. Let's see where this goes around the other side...

First wall is done!
It's over here, too!
It's over here, too!

5/16/2002 11:31:22 AM

How fun. Still can't picture the house all "foofed" up, but this is fun watching it being unwrapped!

Better them than me

5/16/2002 11:40:02 AM

Come on already, let's see the turret!

Sneak Peek
Sneak Peek

5/16/2002 11:57:08 AM

Looking good so far!

Scrapper's dream

5/16/2002 1:17:10 PM

What a haul!

Scrapper's dream
Well this is not attractive

5/16/2002 1:17:21 PM

I wonder what the neighbors are thinking?

Getting messy

5/16/2002 1:17:38 PM

They clean up each time the ground 'disappears'

Getting messy
Fancy to the edge!
Fancy to the edge!

5/16/2002 1:38:26 PM

Okay, we've seen the patterned shingles wrap the entire house. It's a good thing.

What a mess!

5/16/2002 1:39:02 PM

Looking very Frankenstein-ish as a work in progress. Perhaps tomorrow we'll see the windows?!

What a mess!
Mystery solved!
Mystery solved!

5/16/2002 1:39:53 PM

That horrible gap on the first wall was not an original porch roof line at all...it was once a fancy "moulding" like this (thank you whoever thought to save me one little piece of this detail!!). Wonder how much this is gonna cost to replace? :-0

What a sight.

5/16/2002 2:19:17 PM

Oh, I really hope this plywood "goes" tomorrow!

What a sight.
Getting closer...
Getting closer...

5/16/2002 5:30:59 PM

But alas, the turret will have to wait until Monday. With rains coming, all the siding is the priority (that, and covering the "holes" that have been uncovered).

Cool!

5/16/2002 5:31:10 PM

Even the contractors couldn't resist a sneak peek at the turret. Check out the cool transition around the curve!

Cool!
Can you see the windows?
Can you see the windows?

5/16/2002 5:31:53 PM

Looking up the turret, you can just see the trim for the two 6' windows that are just waiting to be revealed.

Work to be done

5/16/2002 5:33:43 PM

Just a reminder that there is still plenty of repair work in our future.

Day Two Begins
Day Two Begins

5/17/2002 7:49:49 AM

Today the front of the house will be revealed, and all the rest of the siding will be removed.

As high as it gets

5/17/2002 7:53:11 AM

Don't think there wasn't somebody holding the other end of this ladder steady!

As high as it gets
Surprise!
Surprise!

5/17/2002 8:21:21 AM

Wow, this gets more fun by the minute. I just looked up an old architecture book and found this exact pattern.

Surprise!

5/17/2002 9:52:20 AM

Check out yet another unusual "decoration" between the two windows!

Surprise!
Surprise!
Surprise!

5/17/2002 11:04:08 AM

So, the turret is apparently highlighted on both sides with these curved boards "filled" with the staggered shingles. We'll have to wait until Monday to see the entire thing revealed.

Interesting angle

5/17/2002 11:04:41 AM

This picture looking up the turret doesn't really show anything new, but I thought it was a cool shot, so I'm sharing. ;-)

So here's how the house looks so far, with most of the siding now down.

Surprise!

5/17/2002 5:46:38 PM

So, when the siding was pulled from the "undersides" of the existing porch, it reveals a portion of the original porch (beadboard and all, was hidden by the drop ceiling used to hang the new light fixture. Incredible what they did to this poor old house!

Surprise!
Original porch roof?
Original porch roof?

5/17/2002 5:44:27 PM

Here's a look at the details still left of the hidden porch ceiling.

#34

5/17/2002 5:50:48 PM

Perhaps remnants of the original house numbers? Nice moulding, though, was hiding under that hideous aluminum siding!

End of Day Two
End of Day Two

5/17/2002 5:47:13 PM

Goodness only knows what will be revealed on Monday when the turret is fully revealed and the porch is demolished. We're expecting heavy rains before then, so you'll notice the "holes" around the house have been covered with flashing. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it works!

Day Three Begins

5/20/2002 6:54:14 AM

One last look at the turret windows "in the dark."

Day Three Begins
We have Windows!
We have Windows!

5/20/2002 8:22:25 AM

Well, we knew we had them, but now you can see them from the outside!

Tougher than it looked

5/20/2002 9:11:51 AM

This plywood box around the turret brought out all the power tools and then some to break free.

Tougher than it looked
More "holes" to fill

5/20/2002 9:13:55 AM

But check out how the pattern goes around the entire house!

After 50+ years in hiding!

The turret revealed
Real Windows
Real Windows

5/20/2002 9:21:18 AM

And a nice bright staircase inside.

The turret REALLY revealed!

5/20/2002 10:10:16 AM

Mostly just repairs needed to replace what they tore off to put on the siding.

The turret REALLY revealed!
For our next trick...
For our next trick...

5/20/2002 9:09:30 AM

The old porch. Let's start with this awful wrought iron railing.

Ahh, that's better

5/20/2002 10:11:24 AM

What a difference with just the railings gone!

Ahh, that's better
Starting with the steps
Starting with the steps

5/20/2002 10:28:19 AM

And man, did they come "apart" easily.

Behind the bricks...

5/20/2002 11:12:54 AM

Once the brick wall was pried off, there was a "retaining wall" behind it, and then...

Behind the bricks...
The dirt!
The dirt!

5/20/2002 11:39:17 AM

Lots and lots and lots of dirt.

Watch out for that first step

5/20/2002 4:03:22 PM

We won't be using the front door for a while...

Watch out for that first step
Did I mention the dirt?
Did I mention the dirt?

5/20/2002 4:05:11 PM

Supposedly within a week the new porch footings will be poured and this will start looking like a restoration and not a demolition!

There goes the neighborhood

5/20/2002 4:05:24 PM

Notice my new mailbox? In the foreground; Al made a shepherds hook out of some rebar from the porch and created a box to mount the mailbox temporarily.

There goes the neighborhood

The end of day three

5/20/2002 4:07:04 PM

...and what a day it was!

Day Four

5/21/2002 10:04:47 AM

Trailer full of porch: the old cement porch was difficult to tear down...look at the tiny chunks it was reduced to after all the pounding.

Day Four
Old Porch is Gone!
Old Porch is Gone!

5/21/2002 10:33:46 AM

First job was smashing off the rest of the cement porch. Next the dirt must go!

Dirt by the trailer load

5/21/2002 2:17:41 PM

They filled this trailer twice today, and there's still more left!

Dirt by the trailer load
Still a sandbox
Still a sandbox

5/21/2002 5:34:44 PM

With some remnants of the retaining wall.

End of day four

5/21/2002 5:34:29 PM

The changes will be more subtle for the next few days, so I'm starting a daily "day's end" photo to track the project.

End of day four
Day Five
Day Five

5/22/2002 5:16:31 PM

Well, all I have is "after" shots of the work done today. They hauled off more dirt, and dug the holes for the new porch footings! (Notice all the unusual "debris" covering the holes.)

Construction camouflage

5/22/2002 5:18:49 PM

There are six porch holes "hidden" in this picture. And no, the hosta is not covering one of them!

A front yard of rubble!

Buried treasures

5/22/2002 5:16:10 PM

Today's excavation revealed one old pepsi bottle, one old beer can, and one not-so-old Christmas decoration (I think it blew off the garland last year). We're still looking for the bags of money.

Buried treasures

Same house, smaller pile of rubble.

Well, that's it for the demolition.
