NORTH HUDSON REGIONAL COMMUNICATION CENTER
N H R C C

About the Department

FIRE CONTROL, As we have unofficially renamed it, is a regionalized communication center serving four Townships (West New York, Weehawken, North Bergen and Guttenberg) and one City(Union City) in North Hudson County, NJ.

Established in 1982, the Center took over all incoming Fire Department Emergency calls for the region and worked with one of the very first CAD systems (computer aided dispatch) ever developed for Fire Dispatching. Twelve Dispatchers were hired and trained and given call sign numbers, beginning with "901". The Late Director, Ray Lax and his Administrative Aide (now retired) Mrs. Matarazzo, paved the way for what has become one of the most technologically advanced Regionalized Dispatching Centers in the Country.

Now leading the way are, Director Andrew Scott and his Assistant, Josephine. We still have twelve Dispatchers, though none of the original Twelve are here.

Today, with the lowest number at 920 and the last one hired, numbered 969, the Job essentially remains the same. Answer every Emergency Call, Send the best possible response as quickly as possible.

Fire Control's Dispatchers are all PROUD MEMBERS OF THE I.A.F.F. LOCAL 620 of WEST NEW YORK NJ

What do we do, you ask???

Twenty-Four Hours a Day, Seven Days a Week, covering a civillian population numbering in the Hundred's of Thousands, we man/woman a radio room with a minimum of two Dispatchers, answering up to and sometimes over 60 calls a day on 15 Hotlines and 3- "911" consoles. Using our Computer Aided Dispatch system we determine the "Best Possible" response to any given incident. We work on a simplified form of the Incident Command System and have the intergrated C.A.D. to ease the pressures of Dispatching. Although each Fire Department is a seperate entity onto itself, they do provide Mutual Aid to each other, for each other.

On average the five towns handle between 40-60 multiple alarms each year, so there's plenty to go around. Add to that the fact that we are surrounded by some of the most dangerous elements: To our West is the heinous Brush of the NJ Meadowlands(AKA Giant's Stadium), to the South lies The treacherous Lincoln Tunnel, at our East is the Ever Flooding Hudson River and old wooden docks and to the North...ok it's just Edgewater, Cliffside Park and Fairview, but still...hey you never know!
