Leadership in the New Millennium Wider Opportunity

Edith Macy Conference Center, Briarcliff Manor, NY
March 30 to April 2, 2000

Updated: April 19, 2000 at 2250. It's a dream only few older Girl Scouts have, and to fulfill it, is something even less of us anticipate. This year, twenty-five of us were accepted to attend a Leadership Institute at Edith Macy Conference Center. Macy is the Girl Scouts of the United States of America (otherwise known by the acronym GSUSA) National training center. It is situated about an hour outside of New York City and has a long history to it. It is an honor to train there.

Early this day, Mom picked Nickole up at the airport. They picked me up at school half-way through the day so that we made it to Macy early. We were assigned our rooms for the duration of the Wider Opportunity. Nickole, Donna, Heather and myself are staying in Treehouse One.

Treehouse One.........Nickole, Myself, Donna, & Heather

Donna and Heather are from Tennessee, while Nickole is from Washington (the state, not DC). Over the next few days we will become great friends.

We each introduced ourselves at our Orientation, telling our name, where we are from, and something interesting about our town (even if it's just that we live there!). The Leadership Institute Manager, Trinia, set up a map of the United States for us to all stick our name and town on to. With that done, we were told of our plans for the next day, to attends sessions at GSUSA National Headquarters in the heart of New York City.

Don't think that we have no fun while we're at these things. We started it off with a movie and popcorn night!

We travelled into NYC to National Headquarters. There, we held two of our leadership sessions, had lunch, and were the first set of Older Girls to be involved in the most recent Cadette/Senior Uniforms Focus Group. Every few years, Older Girls from around the country are questioned about how they want the Girl Scout uniform changed -- style, color, texture -- everything a fashion designer would want to know.

While we were there, several of us were brought into a taping room and interviewed for several Leader Training videos. We were asked things such as: "Who was your favorite leader?" "Why was she your favorite?" "How long have you been a Girl Scout?" "What made you stay in so long?" The list goes on and on.

We went to the brand-new Sony Wonder Exhibit in NYC, then were able to venture off along Fifth Avenue to shop or take in the sites.

Right before we left, some of us were able to stop by the widely acclaimed Rockefeller Center.

We returned to Macy that night, tired, hungry and ready for bed. We were given a pizza party, watched yet another movie, and then slowly all drifted to bed.

CONTINUE through my Wider Oppportunity.
