Shot Put

The shot put. Brute strength is often an advantage in this event. Let me first of all say that I feel very underqualified to talk about this event. With a pr of only 28’ 1.5", one can see why I feel this way. Well let us first of all start with the shot. 16lbs. of iron that one must hurl in the air. There are two crucial areas in the shot that one has to think about: speed across the ring and turning your hips around. Your speed across the ring is important in that one needs to build up the momentum of the shot. I prefer the gluide method over the spin mainly because I have trouble keeping a 16 lbs shot tucked in my neck while spinning. Well, with the glide one wants to make the initial movement straightacross the ring getting ready to build up to the critical hip snap. The hip snap is the weak part of my throw, but if you can manage to turn your hips around before your arm then it adds more momentum to the shot upon release. After the release comes my favorite part. The YELL!. Things to remember during the yell: don’t have the yell last longer than your throw, don’t have an oylimpic yell and a high school throw, and most important don’t yell anything you might regret.
