400 Meter Dash

The 400 meter dash. An event that requires both the endurance of a distance race as well as the speed of a sprinter. With a pr of 48.19, I feel more qualified to talk about the 5th event than any other. I like to think of the 400 in 4 different phases. 1st, I try to reach top speed as quickly as possible. Then phase 2. Once on the back stretch, I concentrate again on getting my hips under me. Also I try not to use my arms at all on the back stretch, saving them for the kick. Onto phase 3. Right after going through the 200 mark, I gradually build up to using my arms. Then comes the final and most important phase. On the homestretch I try to get my hips under me and use my arms to their fullest extent. Here is also the point when you get to see who went out to fast and who saved to much. Of course I try not to think about any of these phases during the race. I feel the most ideal way to run a 400 is to clear your mind of everything and to not concentrate on any other runners while running.
