This years' fall season was a difficult transition, but we have successfully kept lacrosse alive at UNH. This years fall season saw nearly 50 student athletes come our for the team. Practice was held twice a week for seven weeks.
The fall also had the annual edition of our alumni game. This event was again a success. We would like to thank all the alumni who participated and we are looking forward to next years event.
We were also fortunate enough this fall to be invited back to the Dartmouth Tournament in Hanover, NH. Dartmouth allowed us to compete despite being the only club team present. At the tournament we faced rivals Dartmouth and Vermont, as well as Division II power Sacred Heart University. We fared very well in these scrimmages and it was exciting to have the Wildcats back in competition.
These two events brought our fall season together and helped us through the difficult transition period. We would again like to thank everyone who helped make these events possible.
The upcoming spring season was solidified during the transition period this past fall. We are going to be competing in the Pioneer league, which is a well established New England Club League. We have already scheduled seven of our nine league games and are in the scheduling process with the remaing two league games. We are excited to have and compete in a spring season again! We hope to see you at some of our home games! Click Here to see our 1998 Schedule
We would like to thank all the parents, friends, and alumni who have sent donations or helped us at the Alumni Game and/or Dartmouth tournament. Without this support we will be unable to continue the long tradition of Wildcat Lacrosse. Your help and our fundraising efforts are going to make this upcoming season possible, because we are not receiving any financial support from any aspect of the university this season. Once again thanks for helping to continue our tradition.
This years' fundraising efforts are crucial to our survival. We are going to be engaging in four main events to help raise the necessary financial resources we need to survive. We are going to have our annual Spring Clinic for Seacoast lacrosse players, UNH Lacrosse T-shirt (with the help of John Fay '81 and Atlantic Sportswear), a Super Raffle, and the creation of a Sponsorship Plan and Game Day Program that solicits team sponsors and advertisements in our program. If you would like to donate items for the raffle, sponsor the team, get an ad in the game day program, help out with the clinic, or have any other fundraising ideas please contact us!
"The Department of Campus Recreation is proud to recognize the UNH Men's Lacrosse Team as part of the Sport Club Program. The men have demonstrated their commitment and dedication this Fall and we're excited for the Spring Season!
After this probationary year, the club is eligible for and will receive funding through Campus Recreation. Although no club receives 100%)funding, dollars have been allocated to partially cover the cost of necessary supplies, travel expenses (NOT to include lodging and/or meals), league dues, entry fees and a coach's stipend for the 1998-99 Academic Year.
We thank you for your continued support and hope to see you at one or more of our
home games this Spring!"
It is with great sadness that I must inform everyone that our efforts to reinstate the lacrosse program have fallen short. We were not able to change the decision of the administration and the President. I would like to take this time to thank all the people who called, wrote letters and made donations in our behalf to help save the program.
The status of the program is that we will be competing in the Pioneer league of the New England Club Association for the 1997-98 year. This league has been around for over twenty years and is made up of club teams that are sponsored by their universities. There is also a national club championship held each year. (This year it is in Santa Clara, CA). We feel this is our best option at this point in time and it will keep UNH lacrosse on our campus. Our goals will be to have a strong club and show that there is still great interest in lacrosse and to reinstate the program in the future.
Since we will have club status our funding will be minimal (No funding for the first year). Thus it will be essential to raise money. We will be doing various fundraising events as well as clinics to attain our goal. Our CatScratch Newsletter will continue to be published to let alumni and friends know what is going on with UNH lacrosse. I hope that alumni and friends will continue to support our efforts as they have so generously in the past.
As for myself I have been appointed an Associate Athletic Director in our athletic department. Due to my new responsibilities, I will be unable to coach our club team. The coaching duties will be handled by Nate Fitch who was our assistant coach last year with us. Helping Nate out will be our volunteer assistant from last year Kevin Mahoney. Nate and Kevin will do a great job and I will always be there to help in any way I can.
In closing I can only say that UNH lacrosse has been a very big part of my life and always will be. I only hope that in the future fiscal times and Title IX issues will change and we will once again be able to field a UNH Men's Varsity Lacrosse Team. The coaching staff and team would like to thank you so much for the support and kindness that you showed during some trying times. The thing I will remember the most is what a great group of alumni and friends UNH lacrosse has and how proud I am to have been part of it.
Take care of yourselves and I wish you all the best.
Former Head Lacrosse Coach
We hope to continue the tradition of UNH lacrosse and with time regain our varsity status. Now more than ever support from the friends group is crucial as we will be receiving no financial support from the recreation department this year and very little in the future. Any donations would be put towards the operating budget for this year and into our friends account for the future. We still are hoping to build on the endowment started during the turmoil of last season., however it is likely that all available donations and fundraising revenue will be used to operate this season. Also since we do not fall under the jurisdiction of the NCAA, a wider array of sponsorships are viable options. We look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your continued support.
