Sprung Monkey: Details |
The first time I gave Sprung Monkey a real listen was when their single "Gett Em Outta Here" had me pick up
the bands third release "Mr. Funny Face" at a second hand CD store. What I found was a suprisingly
refined rock act from San Diego pulling together what had to be one of the most well rounded albums
that I had ever heard. If you don't own the disc already I highly reccommend that you swing across town and pick it up.
It was back in 1992, and Guitarist Mike Summers was putting together a group of musicians to perfect a list of songs that
he had already written with his friend and fellow guitarist William Riley. From the start, Sprung Monkey was seeing its
share of problems, the lineup kept shifting while searching out musicians, and try as they might, no lead singer was to be found.
That is, until Mike's brother Steve volenteered his talent and Sprung Monkey began to take shape.
It's been two years since the release of "Mr. Funny Face," the bands most popular record to date, and Sprung Monkey has
just finished recording their fourth album. (The San Diego music scene is impatiently awaiting it's release.) For Sprung Monkey, this is probably going
to be the disc that throws the band into the deeper waters of mainstream music, and I for one hope that they swim for the
recognition that they deserve.
