Green Day: Details |
It's been called to cornerstone to every compact disc collection, and it's scary how true that is.
I don't know anyone who doesn't own Dookie, Green Day's first major record release. It was the first CD
that I ever purchased, back when CD players were becoming popular. Dookie had sold over eight million copies in the
US, selling over eleven million copies internationally. That year, Green Day also won the 1994 Grammy
for Best Alternative Music Performance.
Friends since childhood, and both fans of the California punk scene, Billy Joe and Mike Dirnt
formed their first band "Sweet Children" when they were 14 years old with drummer and friend Al Sobrante.
Time passed and in 1989 the band changed its name to Green Day and recorded it's first EP "1,000 Slappy Hours, and
their first record, "39 Smooth." Two years later, Green Day would see it's final transformation, when Tre Cool became
their permanent drummer and the trio recorded "Kerplunk."
Of course, we all know what happens next, the band records it's third major album, "Dookie," and
explodes to the forefront of the punk scene. Since their initial noteriety, Green Day has
adapted and grown musically, but no matter how the band has changed, three things have always
remained the same: Billy Jo's hair has never remain one solid color for any extended period of time,
Green Day has always been one of the most unpredictable music acts to grace the stage, and
Green Day has and always will make the best in bitter rock music.
